Thats the way it was.,

No one realizes how long a year is untill you have spent one on Cape Hinchenbrook.Try it at 18 years of age,however CHIEF Jackson went back for a second tour and maybe more.Four men eating from a large number 10 can of vegtables, the same can goes on forever.I often wonder what happened to the hundreds of V disc,<music records >the goverment sent us .The book,the book is good easy reading,well written and a trip back in time.My story begins on page 55.If you have any intrest in Lighthouses Buy or rent this coffie table book.signed Charles L.Umpstead a 1948 Hinchenbrook suvivor USCG retiredC.L.Umpstead

My grandfather, John DeMan, born in Holland, was enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and stationed at one of the lighthouses in Southeast Alaska. He himself is mentioned and was interviewed by the author.
