Exciting Adventure With A Female Protaganist,
By A Customer
This review is from: Northern Passage [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Contrary to the summaries I have seen posted and the cover art, this is not a Western. It is the story of a young woman caught between two cultures. Neve Campbell portrays Nepeese, a young woman who is half Native Canadian and half white. She is the star of the movie, even though it is Jeff Fahey who has the top billing. His part is strong but Campbell's Nepeese is the force behind the story. Nepeese does not fit into the world of her white father or into that of her Native Canadian mother. She has suppoters from both cultures but still feels isolated. A parallel story of a wolf/dog mix mirrors that of Nepeese. The wolf/dog, Buree, is also on his own until he meets Nepeese. Together, they must face an obsessed fur trader determined to destroy Buree and take Nepeese for his own. Fahey's character, Paul, promises Nepeese's father that he would portect her if anything happens to her father. When the obsessed fur trader kills her father, Paul must keep his promise. This movie has a strong plot that kept me interested until the dramatic conculusion. I would highly recommend it, even at the current price. It was well worth it.

I have seen this film and wanted to purchase it, but it seems difficult to find. I am actually from the hometown of the author of the book that this movie is based and am very proud of the fact. James Oliver Curwood is such a great author. I recommend his writings. This movie does an excellent job of giving the feel for the environments in the film and I definately recommend it for those that interested in period pieces such as the Klondike gold rush, etc.
