Instead of coming up with a box set of obscure underground tracks played at certain British clubs, they've chosen to pull cuts from other mainstream northern soul compilations. For nearly $100, I think fans deserve much better than that. Where's Kurt Harris' "The emperor of my baby's heart" that rarely ends up on a northern soul compilation but is in high demand and a long-time early favorite on the scene.

Here are the discs this set is culled from as you're much better off getting these. It's cheaper and the original way these tracks were brought into the digital age.

This Is Northern Soul! The Motown Sound, Vol. 1

This Is Northern Soul! A Collection of 24 Tamla Motown Northern Soul, Vol. 2

Original Northern Soul Hits From Cameo Parkway

The Best Northern Soul All-Nighter...Ever!

There are a few from the Cellar Full of Motown series but not many and even some current tracks mixed in for what purpose I'm not sure. Frankie Valli and Chubby Checker here appear multiple times and they were not the most representative of the genre. It's sort of a "this is what we got the rights to" box set with a scrambled sequence and only a handfull of tracks that are not on the 5 aforementioned compilations but are readily available elsewhere.

I've never done a review but am active in chat forums yet feel a need to warn consumers about this. I don't have it but this has become common place amongst second and third generation reissues.

This compilation of Northern Soul takes from Universal Music Group-owned labels...mainly Motown. The 4 cd box set is incredibly Motown-centric...The first two CD's are almost exclusively Motown, and while all great songs, many songs included weren't even a very important part of the Northern Soul movement.
However, all this Motown material is available remastered in the best quality elsewhere. All four of these CD's have vinyl dubs where there shouldn't be, and sound quality is simply horrible throughout.
The Cameo-Parkway tunes all seem to be taken from vinyl...and "Picture Me Gone" by Evie Sands is unlistenable, it is so scratchy.

The songs are all good songs...but it is better to find them elsewhere.
This is a very messy collection.

Four discs 68,73,71,67 minutes each approximately. The digital remastering of these tracks has brought them up to a good overall standard. But some tracks sound better than others. The vocals are crisp and clean, while the background instrumentation is clearly delineated. The discs are "snapped in" on the inside front and back covers of the hardback book style package.

This set is one of the better collections of "Northern Soul" that has been issued if you don't own any of the other previous collections where a number of these tracks appear. It was compiled by the Wigan Casino DJ Russ Winstanley. Winstanley ran the legendary club-Wigan Casino-from 1973 through 1981. There is an overview of the era written by Winstanley, with an explanation of why certain tracks were picked by him, with a few black and white photographs from the era. Each track is listed with a short commentary by Winstanley, which gives this set a more enjoyable, personal feel. There are photographs of a number of the performers and small color reproductions of pertinent 45's.

The music is generally upbeat, with a few slower numbers to vary the listening tempo. But the overall feel of floor-filling dance music permeates this great collection. Included are classics of the genre alongside rarities and lesser known tracks ("Thank You For Lovin' Me" by Frankie Valli) that don't usually show up in these collections. Also included are a few current tracks ("Real Love" by DRIZABONE) which show how this music has continued to evolve. One interesting track is Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You",one of the most expensive (to buy) records in the world. But the accent is clearly on music associated with the mid-seventies era of up-tempo soul music.

This is a great set of Northern Soul, but why is it out of print when it just came out end of 2008?

At any rate, if you are a fan of Northern Soul or obscure (to the US anyway) R&B, this is a must have so get it while you can before the prices go wayyy up on the secondhand markets. Nice liners and box packaging, good sound too.

For $87.98 you'd think they could afford to give us a track listing. How did they arrive at that exact price anyhow?
