4.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to any "groove based" library
I'm not quite sure why there are the low reviews for this CD. It's a great mix. Tracks like "Dan-Solo" will keep your head bobbing while "Entrance to Zanibar" is a totally new experience. Granted, the disc doesn't have the stand out singles that brought Vertigo (with "I see you Baby" and "At The River") and Goodbye Country...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not better
I bought this CD on a whim b/c it was re-released (previously an import only) and I thought it would be just as good as Vertigo. I mistakenly thought it was a new release...hahaha. Anyway the tracks are similar with that mellow groove going on, but it's just not as polished as Vertigo. If you're dying to hear more from this duo then get it, just don't expect it to...

I'm not quite sure why there are the low reviews for this CD. It's a great mix. Tracks like "Dan-Solo" will keep your head bobbing while "Entrance to Zanibar" is a totally new experience. Granted, the disc doesn't have the stand out singles that brought Vertigo (with "I see you Baby" and "At The River") and Goodbye Country.... (with "Superstylin" etc.) out into the public view, but it still has enough groove, style and intricacy to earn it a spot in your repeated listening rotation. If you're looking for fast paced "club" style beats, this isn't your CD. But if you are a TRUE fan of Groove Armada and their ambient techno/chilled beats then this CD is definately worthy of your money. Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars groove armada northern star, January 16, 2001

groove armada totally set me reeling with the opening track of "vertigo" (their 2nd ,and to my mind far superior release].This is "nice" chill music, but in terms of longlasting "I will still love this release in 10 years" appeal it does not get this stamp. As they say in showbiz "Nice ,but no cigar". Try the excellent D Note or purchase their classic Vertigo instead

5.0 out of 5 stars An early GA work..., March 9, 2005
This review is from: Northern Star (Audio CD)
...but still a resounding success and a goodie!

It samples and experiments with the best traditions of European, ambient house and chill.

The tracks are interesting and diverse enought to hold your attention throughout the work, and there are some excellent and infectious works here, everything from catchy maniac bongoes to chilled, lie on your back and stare at clouds stuff! Treat your ears and your friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars Groove Armada - Northern Star, February 24, 2011
This review is from: Northern Star (Audio CD)
Groove Armada's first album, Northern Star, is one of their stronger ones, if not the strongest. Technically, it's not as clean as their later albums, but it's got such a powerful feeling of soul that it's hard to say no to it. The first three tracks alone, "Dr. Eiff," "Captain Sensual," and "Entrance to Zanzibar," would be worth the price of the album alone, but the grooves keep coming... much like an armada, as a matter of fact. "Dirty Listening" is smooth funk, while "Dan-Solo" goes for more street-wise funk. "Pillar 13" is the ballad of surburbia, while the final, short track "Bonus Stitch 1 & 2" keeps a smile on your face. A completely charming and accomplished album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen Up!, June 9, 2001

Students and Masters of "The Good Groove"...take the 3-star comments from the peanut gallery for what they are. For the real deal, check-out the Editorial Review from Rough Guide here and BUY THIS THING.

Mixes come and go, a lot of 'em dumb, dank, dull...this ain't one of 'em. In fact, if totally "polished" is what you're after maybe you should pass "GO" and proceed directly to Vertigo. Or, you could get into ALL the Groove Armada stuff and just let it rip...

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, no rap!, May 26, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Northern Star (Audio CD)
I found this cd to be much better than any reviews I have read. I very much appreciate the fact that there is no rap, like most of their recent music. They songs are very stylized, interesting, have a great beat, and are actually very melodic. I love this group, and of all the CDs, this one has the most songs that I really enjoy. Give it a try!
