Book Description

October 10, 2007
North Korea, a Communist nation in desperate financial straits, concentrates its military resources on a scientist bent on swiftly creating missile technology that can: a) take out other countries satellites in space; b) disseminate nuclear payloads to all parts of the earth, thus giving it the power to extort trillions from the rest of the world; and c) be sold to terrorists and rogue nations at exceedingly high prices.
To protect its investment, North Korea takes no chances. A super-skilled North Korean assassin with the latest lethal methods is dispatched to secretly kill the scientist s worldwide competitors.
Meantime, the U.S. military plucks Marine reservist Will Parker from retirement. His mission? Penetrate dangerous North Korea, and flesh out its leading military scientist from an entourage of three doppelgangers Parker roomed with the real guy his freshman year in college.
At the same time, with the help of a North Korean asset, the FBI finally connects the dots, and starts on the trail of the North Korean assassin, hoping to catch him before he kills again.
It s a corker of a well-paced story that makes you feel like you re there. And why not? Harp, a retired USMC colonel and longtime member of the Reserves, gives his protagonist an in-depth backstory and special set of characteristics that a broad audience can relate to and appreciate. He tells the story of a longtime military man relearning to do the right thing for the right reasons. He populates A Northern Thunder with some mind-blowing military technology all little known, but actually in existence. And his North Korean theme and milieu couldn t be more timely or more important and will remain so for decades. Plus, Harp s A Northern Thunder springs straight from the real world. The threat to the world s satellites is acutely and officially recognized by the United States, among others.
With tons of action, intrigue, character, romance, and deception, A Northern Thunder has everything a good spy story needs. It s a riveting military thriller/spy novel, written in the much-praised tradition of Tom Clancy s very best work.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Wow! This is one terrific book action-packed first chapter to draw you in, a tempo that never lets up, very familiar terrain (four extra drill points for visiting so many training centers and fleet headquarters), and a story that s good to the very last twist! I strongly urge all Marines, ex-Marines, and especially Reservists to read it, because you no doubt will love Andy Harp s A Northern Thunder, a real fine page-turner you won t want to put down! --Kevin Doyle, Past President, Marine Corps Reserve Officers Association

The pace of this bold thriller is heart-pounding, indeed . . . Harp s own experience as both a Marine and a prosecutor lend the story utter believability. Perhaps not quite as complex as Clancy novels, Northern Thunder certainly belongs in the hands of all military-thriller fans. --Booklist

In Harp s debut, the secondary characters aren t nearly as convincing as his descriptions of satellite technology, submersible suits, and the like. But protagonist Will Parker, a small-town Georgia lawyer and Desert Storm Marine vet recruited for a dangerous mission, has resilience, foresight, and fortitude to spare, and North Korea s repressive regime and rugged terrain make for deadly opponents. --Publishers Weekly

5.0 out of 5 stars adrenaline pumping military thriller, January 10, 2008
This review is from: A Northern Thunder (Hardcover)
Staunch Stalinist Peter Nampo lives in North Korea; he wants to make it a power to be reckoned with and a moneymaker for its satellite weapon system that he is developing. Once in geo-orbit, it can knock out other countries satellites and spread radiation on its enemies; he plans to sell it to terrorists and rogue nations for hard cash to feed the population that is on the verge of starvation.

Nampo is such a VIP that he is a never in the open unless it is with his three doubles; a North Korean assassin is killing all the scientists around the globe that are near completion on the weapons system. Rear Admiral Julius Krowl of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is aware of the situation and sends Reserve Colonel Will Parker, the only western man who knows what Nampo looks like to get inside North Korea and figure out which of the doppelgangers is the real Nampo in order to take a picture. He prepares for the mission under grueling conditions but he also makes preparation to make sure his back is covered if he is successful.

Readers of fast paced, adrenaline pumping military thrillers that keep the audience attention throughout will thoroughly enjoy NORTHERN THUNDER. Each main character is well developed and understandable even the villains (who consider themselves the good guys patriots and our side the villains) who hate the United States. Surprisingly, China is portrayed as a gentle giant trying to keep its wayward child under control. Andy Harp knows how to create a good story that is germane to the times.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!, April 14, 2011
This review is from: A Northern Thunder (Hardcover)
I just finished reading "A Northern Thunder" the other night and thought it was a great, fast paced book that was smart and realistic. The characters are believable, the settings are dead on and realistic, and the action and background is as realistic as you can get without being there yourself! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend this to anyone for an enjoyable read. LTC Andy Harp, USMC Ret. has really researched the politics of a very isolated culture, and has brought his knowledge of winter survival and training and created a scenario that is probably closer to the truth than anyone would like to admit. I can't wait to read his next novel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable thriller, June 15, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Northern Thunder (Hardcover)
In this ever-increasing cynical world, where some thrillers appeare to be manufactured, and one too many coincidences can really spoil the plot, Colonel Andy Harp USMCR (Ret) seems have been sitting in on some very interesting meetings, specifically with the Joint Chief of Staff. NORTHERN THUNDER should scare the hell out of every reader, because this story is playing out in Northern Korea as we speak. Hello! Is the United States government paying attention? If so, maybe someone should give Mr. Harp a call, and ask his opinion of this incredibly explosive situation. Ripped from the headlines? No way, NORTHERN THUNDER came out long before this rogue nation fired off two missiles. Part Jack Ryan (Clancy), part Mitch Rapp (Flynn), part Gabriel Allon (Silva), protagonist Will Parker will not only bite you in the throat, this man will draw blood. If and when teams are chosen for war, I'm taking Parker--he's one of those rare characters we love to root for. A terrific thriller, written by a gifted writer, who is apparently plugged in, I highly recommend NORTHERN THUNDER. If you're a Tom Clancy fan, you've come to the right place. When you come out with another book, Mr. Harp, please drop me a line.
