Great tool and back saver,

OK I demolished a house and needed to take off the roof lath so I bought two "Gutsters" and one "Duckbill Deck Wrecker".
Gutster changed designs as the lime green handled unit (series 2)advertised here has a handle with a circular cross section and my other Gutster (orange handle, maybe series one??) is oval. I liked the oval handle best as it was a bit lighter, and both were plenty strong for the demolition. OK, both the Gutster and the Duckbill wecking bars are TERIFIC as their forked heads allows you to span a joist and easily pop off decking. The Gutster's tips are chissled to allow you to spear and pry into tight crevices. The Gutster has multiple surfaces that act as fulcrums giving incredible leverage. I would say they are both worth every penny. Now in comparision between the Gutster and the Duckbill I liked the design of the Duckbill as it allows you to safely stand on existing decking and lift up to pry the decking off. The Gutster pries by pushing down so that I was prying down towards the side with no decking. The Gutster's forks are longer allowing removal of 2x6s and 8s with less chance of splintering. The Gutster also has grooves for pulling nails which came in handy. Because of the splintering, ninety percent of the removal was done with the Gutster and it's longer forks. If I could only buy one it would be the Gutster. I would like to add at the time of this writing, Gutster is coming out with a new design and is selling them at a discount from their website. Good Luck

broke it torquing a joist. snapped at weld at base of fork. I've had it for less than two months and it is only warrantied for 30 days from northern tool. buyer beware when torquing joists with this "tool". however, it does pop deck boards with ease. i'll be writing the manufacturer about the quality of their product as well... since they show the "tool" being used for this very purpose in the video demo on their site. i give it a zero

The think is a cheap piece of junk. It broke on the second board I was trying to remove from my porch. Northern tool was not very responsive but Amazon got results and I was able to return it. I would not waste my money on the item.

Pros: Incredibly useful/versatile. Fairly heavy construction. Great for tearing up floor, studs, siding, etc.
Cons: Over-priced. Someone with the right tools could easily construct one of these and make it a little beefier. I didn't use it but the nail puller strip seems like it would be almost useless for tearing out nails but I could be wrong. THE HANDLE IS TOO SHORT. If you are going to buy one of these buy one with a longer handle. I'm 5'8" and I would still have to bend over using this to pry on the floor. I would recommend this if someone is willing to shell out the cash or looking to buy this as a gift. |
