4.0 out of 5 stars Low Price Gem, December 24, 2008

Northey Valenzuela

It is a pretty good album. It has 4 or 5 songs that are keepers. The "corner gas" theme song makes the album worth having.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music for Any Occasion, April 16, 2006
This review is from: Northey Valenzuela (Audio CD)
This collaboration between Northey and Valenzuela is a great album for almost anything. Driving, work, relaxing, you name it. I'm not sure you'll like it after the first time around, but after a few listens, it starts to grow on you. The vocals are just about alternated between the two singers, and while I'm not too familiar with Northey's music, Valenzuela's songs are similar to those on "Tunes Young People Will Enjoy," his previous solo album, which I also highly recommend. Here is a breakdown of the songs, with a rating.

"Talk To Yourself"-(8/10)-Great opener! A song about helping a friend in trouble, but not until this friend decides he needs help.

"Counting On You"-(8/10)-Bluesy, catchy, and fast-paced. A classic example of good guitar work

"Something Good"-(9/10)-Relaxing love song, I think someone told me it's a cover

"Bulletproof Jacket"-(3/10)-I know the rating seems harsh, and I hate to say it, but Jesse managed to mess up his own song. The version on TYPWE is slower and more emphatic, with this version being choppy and rushed.

"See Through Heart"-(7/10)-Short, but good use of the organ (I think it's an organ!) and the vocals and intrumentals are in perfect balance.

"Not a Lot Goin' On"-(8/10)-The theme song to the popular Canadian show "Corner Gas," this is a great use of key change, and the lyrics paint a great picture.

"Let It Go"-(9/10)-Just great! I don't even want to describe it and ruin it for you :-)

"Slow Goodbye"-(8/10)-Remember what I said about driving music? Here you go!

"The Little Things"-(6/10)-Something light just to keep the album moving along.

"Halfway to Happy"-(6/10)-Spartan instruments help you focus on the lyrics, which deserve some focusing. Supposedly about songwriting, but it's open to whatever you think.

"She Belongs"-(11/10)-Hands down the best song on the album! Great vocals and chord changes, not to mention lyrics that will conjure up a dream

"Borrowing Trouble"-(8/10)-Kind of country/blues/rock, with some fun, bright lyrics

"Hurting on the Outside"-(8/10)-Slow and relaxing ballad, great closer.

It doesn't matter what kind of music you like or where you're from, there's probably at least 3 or 4 songs here that will resonate.

So...BUY THIS ALBUM!

2.0 out of 5 stars Well, it's ok I guess, March 31, 2008

First heard of it because of the corner gas theme song being on this CD. Don't get me wrong that song is really catchy, but I have heard it a billion times watching the show. The rest of it is ok for background music, but I just don't think enough of it to give it a buy it" recommendation.
