More About the Author

Jeff Renner serves as Chief Meteorologist at Seattle's KING Television; he's forecast weather in the northwest since 1980, holding a degree in Atmospheric Science from the University of Washington. Jeff is frequently called upon to share his weather knowledge as an expert witness in court cases, has served as a board member for the American Meteorological Society and regularly serves as a guest contributor on the Weather Channel.

Jeff admits to using his job as a meteorologist as an excuse to do extensive "field research". That's meant backpacking, climbing, skiing, scuba diving, sailing and flying. Tough duty, as Jeff says, but someone has to do it. That "research" has included climbing and backpacking forays into the mountains of Alaska, the Yukon, British Columbia and Alberta, the Rockies, Sierras, Cascades and Appalachians...as well as diving and sailing in and near Micronesia, Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest, Mexico and the Caribbean.

All that time outdoors convinced Jeff that most weather-related accidents are unnecessary; that understanding how to enjoy yourself and be safe don't require weeks in a classroom, but rather reading clearly presented principles highlighted by fascinating examples from actual outings. Sometimes those outings are ones Jeff has been involved with, others are taken from news headlines. It's a skill that Jeff brings to each of his books and that makes him an in-demand speaker. He says the greatest accomplishment is when someone credits his writing with steering them away from or out of trouble.
