Killer Pagan Black Metal from Finland,
By Musical Warfare (Seattle, WA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Northwind's Ire (Audio CD)
Finland's Draugnim play pagan / viking metal, but their sound definitely falls more towards the black metal side of things. The riffing and melodies do have a strong folk influence, but you won't find any odd folk instruments on this album, and Draugnim's sound is both expansive and crushingly heavy. Their guitars have this really sweet, epic tone to them that gives the music a warlike feel, and the vocals are also stellar. They use keyboards, but in a very understated way.
For me, this album has the perfect balance of folk influence and black metal heaviness and aggression. The song 'Feast of the Fallen' is one of the best songs of this genre that I've heard, but there were several other great tracks on the album like 'Moonpath', 'Towards The Dusk' and 'Archein'. This is definitely a must-have if you're into pagan and viking metal. |
