Product Description

Amazon.com Review

While Norton has become synonymous with security and protection, it doesn't presume that the average user knows much about virus protection. Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional offers a perfect combination of instruction, guidance, and, of course, dependable protection against whatever may be threatening your business's computers. Moreover, the user interface offers a simple and straightforward way to immediately see the last time you updated your software, if any new threats have been discovered, and what options you may adjust.

Compared to other packages, Norton AntiVirus excels by not trying to be everything to everyone. After a quick install and restart, it presents you with a comprehensive to-do list. You can scan for viruses, update your virus info, and register your package all in one easy step. Your Palm OS handheld is also protected from potential threats that can infect it while syncing or beaming. Norton AntiVirus gets installed on your first sync after your desktop install, and is managed through it's own icon on the Palm home screen.

Norton AntiVirus automatically handles known and unknown viruses, suspicious scripts, and other threats, and provides constant protection through Auto-Protect (which loads into memory when you start your computer or handheld). The package largely handles its set tasks in the background, and doesn't suck up tons of memory or demand your constant attention. The ability to scan for viruses while still going about your business is a true blessing. (When we scanned for viruses and threats the first time, Norton scanned over 120,000 files in about 75 minutes. Much of this time we spent working on other tasks, checking in with Norton now and then.)

To optimize system performance, you may tinker with a few options to alter how controlled scans will be and what areas Norton AntiVirus will look at. We favored the Schedule function, allowing for an automatic scan at the interval of our choice (we selected a time during a weekly meeting). Other options control the handling of infected files: you may opt to have Norton AntiVirus save a copy before attempting a repair, scan system files on startup (for Windows 98 users), or alert you if your virus protection software is out-of-date. Other features available are the UnErase wizard (to recover files and data from the Recycle Bin) and Wipe Info (to completely remove sensitive data from your computer).

The neatest feature of Norton AntiVirus 2002 is its new integration with Windows Explorer, which lets you launch Norton from the Explorer pane with one simple click. This, and other timesaving, easily accessible shortcuts, makes Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional a smart decision for any serious businessperson. --Emilie Herbst

Amazon.com Product Description

One of the world's most trusted antivirus solutions, Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional Edition offers advanced data protection for both PCs and Palm OS devices. It's always working in the background to protect you from dangers lurking on the Internet and other possible sources of infected files. Now it repairs common virus infections automatically, without interrupting your work. The latest virus definitions are downloaded automatically whenever you connect to the Internet, ensuring that your virus protection is always up-to-date.

While Norton's Automatic LiveUpdate keeps you updated, your system also stays protected against Trojan horses, malicious ActiveX code, and Java applets, even in compressed files. A quarantine feature quickly isolates the infected files in a protected area on your hard disk until they can be repaired. And, the software's Scan and Deliver wizard makes it easy to send infected files to the Symantec Security Response team for analysis.

Even between updates, your system stays protected. Symantec's exclusive Script Blocking technology defends against fast-moving threats by identifying and stopping new script-based viruses, such as the I Love You and the Anna Kournikova viruses. To safeguard and prevent the spread of viruses, Norton AntiVirus scans and cleans both incoming and outgoing messages and attachments in standard POP3 clients, including Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, MSN Mail, and Netscape Mail. All the while, this edition's easy-to-use interface lets you instantly access many functions from your desktop, keeping you calm, cool, collected, and, best of all, completely protected.

Note: One year of free virus definition service updates included with purchase of Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional Edition; annual subscription service available online for subsequent updates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly - with Win 98 and Zone Alarm, May 27, 2002

I'm sorry to read that some customers have had problems. In my experience, NAV is effective and effortless to install and use. I am using an overburdened IBM Thinkpad laptop running Windows 98 SE and have had an entirely positive experience with NAV. It installed without a hitch and has had no conflicts with Zone Alarm or any of the other Internet and security software I am running. NAV is an essential tool - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works very well, April 30, 2002

I've installed and maintained a slightly earlier version of this product on over 40 computers on a campus network, on NT, 95 (yes!), 98, ME, and 2000. Only once have I had a hitch with installation. Though this was annoying, the symantec site had correct, detailed instructions for the getting around the bug. Several of these computers run Outlook, the most vulnerable e-mail software, but they are set to update definitions daily. With updated definitions and auto-protect on, I've never had a virus trash a computer. NAV has caught and quarantined around 50 viruses in the past year (that users have notified me about), and users have probably deleted some viruses on their own. It can't be perfect, but it's track record for me has been nearly perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Hitches, surprise, surprise!, July 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional Edition (CD-ROM)
A computer user of only average skill, I was prepared to be frustrated when my laptop needed a security upgrade. Reviews of most products, including reviews on Amazon, are rife with nightmares, complications, and dissatifaction with the general level of difficulty that accompanies AntiVirus software.
Surprise, surprise!
The product is a simple as anyone could wish to install (and I've tried the online updates: equally simple) with concise directions and clear prompts. The defaults were appropriate for me, but there was obviously room for sophisticated users to customize the configurations.
I am happy with the product and relieved by the ease of installation. An average user can buy this item with confidence.
