Norton 2010,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Norton Antivirus 2010 1-User [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
What is there to say, I have found that buying a new version of Norton from Amazon each year is less expensive than buying a "subscription" upgrade from Symantec itself for some reason.
While it is a bit of a "pain" to have to use the Norton Removal Tool before installing the new version, I like doing it since I end up with all the newest definitions, functions, and actaully save money doing it. I had some trouble last year when the 2009 version also negated access to my MP3 player driver somehow, and I had a heck of a time getting everything working again. This year's version, no problem. Still Norton, still great virus protection, and an even better SONAR attack identifier included in the system. Clint Wigen.

Product disables itself unless you pay yearly renewal fees,

I'm giving all Norton 2009 and 2010 antivirus products a 1-star because of their "software-as-rental" policies.
I thought the 1 year subscription period meant that automatic updates would no longer be provided, but that otherwise the product would continue to work OK. Wrong. The software stops working and disables itself, unless you pay the yearly renewal fees, which are much higher than so-called "buying" the next year's version. Imagine if Windows stopped working, unless you kept paying yearly fees to Microsoft, forever.

My new netbook came with a trial subscription of Mcaffee already on it. It seemed like every 10 minutes it was reminding you it was going to run out and prodding you to fork over big bucks to continue the protection. My neighbors son installs all the computer systems for the public schools here and he recommended Norton instead. I'm glad I took his advice as Norton doesn't slow down my little netbook like the Mcaffee did, it also cost less than half as much. Once I decided to go with Norton I started shopping and found Amazon was the cheapest. The download was super easy and everything worked out great. It works quietly in the background and does what it said it would. This was a very good purchase for me.

Non-existent Support,
By Shinytop (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews

I have been a Norton customer for many years, but will never again purchase a Norton product. When the product suddenly stopped working, I followed the Contact Us link on the Norton website in search of the support phone number. This was only the beginning of my problem.
First of all, there is no phone number posted on the website - you must submit detailed information via an online form and only then are you provided with a phone number and "Priority ID". Next, you call the number and enter the priority ID from the previous step. Next, you go on hold and wait. And wait. And wait. In my case, I waited over 75 minutes on hold before finally giving up. In case you decide to purchase this product, I recommend praying that you do not experience any issues, since technical support is non-existent.

Not as good as the (free) Microsoft Security Essentials,
By John (Southern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Norton Antivirus 2010 1-User [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
My new HP laptop (with 64-bit Vista) came with a Norton subscription. It worked for a while, then I got an error trying to update the definitions. I was relieved that the Norton support site listed the exact error description along with a remedy, but after going through their tedious procedure (to the letter) it *still* wouldn't download updates, giving me the same error message! What a HASSLE!
I uninstalled it and installed Microsoft Security Essentials, which works great! (Note: MSE *does* verify that you have a legitimate copy of Windows before it will install.) Put your credit card away! Just search for "Microsoft Security Essentials," download and install it, and you're done! It automatically updates its own definitions daily and it looks cool, to boot: a little green icon with a check-mark on the task bar assures me that all is well. It caught a Trojan from a bad website trying to install itself. And the price is right! :^) I would have paid more for the Microsoft product but it's FREE!

Want to be held Hostage by your software?,

Well if you like that sort of thing, you should love this software. First let me talk about the minor problems with the software. I installed the software, ran the full scan every couple of weeks.
One day about a month ago, I was simply surfing the web, not downloading any files or anything. I started getting messages popping up at the bottom of my screen. It turns out a Trojanfake had penetrated the Norton's security. I opened The Norton window and the Sonar was turned off. I went through a full system scan removed the virus. A week later, same thing all over again. It's another Trojanfake, but this time it has Norton's logo and company name threatinng that I had a trial version of the software and I would need to pay to download the full version. This is total BS. I purchased the full version here on Amazon. So again, removed the Trojanfake. So I remove Nortons utilites from my computer and reinstall. Now, everytime I do a search on Yahoo or google, I get a message an attempt to penetrate your computer was blocked. I finally removed Norton's for good and installed Vipre. I ran a full scan with Viper and bingo it finds another Trojan that Norton's couldn't find. My computer is running very fast now and no problems, since removing the Norton's software. DOn't buy Norton's Antivirus, you will regret it.

Crashes and leaves your computer unprotected,

After a few weeks it would crash while doing a background scan. After 3 uninstalls and reinstalls (and the same crashing occuring) I used the Norton online chat help feature. After 2 hours of this I think its fixed. The fix is a special norton uninstaller (separate app called NRT) that apparently cleans up a lot of disruptive junk the normal uninstall of Norton 2010 leaves behind. After a thorough uninstall, do a reinstall. When it works it works fine, but virus software that creashes is spooky.

It seems to work good for stopping viruses but it slows down my computer, especially during startup. It always seems to be scanning in the background which I guess is good if you have a newer computer but mine is old and takes forever with this running.

Buyer beware, hidden costs are horrible,
This review is from: Norton Antivirus 2010 1-User [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
If somehow your machine becomes infected and the product cannot remove the infection, you will have to contact Norton for support, however it is not free. It cost US$ 99.00
When (not if) product fails to discover the virus, and it cannot delete it, you will have to pay again to Norton to help you remove it. If you are a reseler, like me, who had sold close to 50 installations this year, imagine the nightmare. Buy another product, stay away from Norton 2009 and 2010. [...] This is their claim: Although we, at Symantec, would like to be able to provide a perfect antivirus solution that can never be circumvented, unfortunately that is not possible. No antivirus software is a guarantee against a computer becoming infected with a virus. It is a preventative measure that delivers very effective protection, but is not 100% foolproof. Norton AntiVirus, and the Norton security suite products that include Norton AntiVirus (like Norton 360), offer industry leading protection against virus infections on your computer. However, the effectiveness of the protection depends on certain conditions. USELESS!!!

Terrible,

They have terrible customer service. I started to use AVG because it's free and much better than Norton. I was just waiting for my service to lapse on the Norton when they automatically charged my credit card to renew. It's in the FINE print when you sign up. You have to send like 10 emails to stop the automatic re-enrollement.
In order for you to get your money back after the automatic re-enroll you must sit through 30 minutes of the most mind numbing music ever composed. It's a 100% ploy to get you off the phone to stop the cancellation. I love rap, rock, classical, and pop. No person in their right mind could possibly sit through this music without holding it away from your ear. Hung up a few times and called on different days. Each call was no less than 30 minute wait and some calls were automatic hang ups after connection. Took me 3-4 hours on 4-5 days to get refund. NOT WORTH IT!!! Go with AVG...it's free and worked all the bugs that Norton left on!! |
