5.0 out of 5 stars Out of many anthologies, this may be the best
Several nature and environmental literature anthologies are on the market, and a small handful of these could be considered well rounded. Many are only contemporary, or they only focus on the foundational texts. In this anthology, Norton does what it does best, providing a broad selection of literature that spans almost 300 years, including diverse authors (men and...

3.0 out of 5 stars the Norton Book of Nature Writing (college edition)
Well, it was a shame to discover that this book is the same as the other Norton Nature Writing book. Only the college edition is $10 more expensive and absolutely the same. Tsk! Tsk. I have accidentally ordered the same book twice and been charged more for one than the other. How does that work. Concerning the work. I am considering ordering it for a college...

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of many anthologies, this may be the best, March 24, 2011
Several nature and environmental literature anthologies are on the market, and a small handful of these could be considered well rounded. Many are only contemporary, or they only focus on the foundational texts. In this anthology, Norton does what it does best, providing a broad selection of literature that spans almost 300 years, including diverse authors (men and women and a number of ethnicities). While many of the works are ones we expect to see in a nature anthology (Muir, Abbey, Stegner), other authors that are not found in many anthologies really make this book stand apart. Such authors include Janisse Ray, Louise Erdrich, and Doug Peacock. Can these authors be found in other anthologies? Yes. Can they all be found in one? No. The closest I've come is American Earth, which is a gorgeous book (my personal favorite in my own collection), but it comes with an environmental and political agenda (which are fine if that's what you're teaching) and doesn't have quite the span that the Norton book has. I'm looking at these books from the perspective of a college Environmental Literature and Environmental Writing course perspective, and I believe Norton covers the basics and beyond for undergraduates. In a graduate classroom, I would suggest a more specialized text.

I have accidentally ordered the same book twice and been charged more for one than the other. How does that work. Concerning the work. I am considering ordering it for a college text--the cheaper version.

I am happy with the purchase of this used book.
I can't imagine what it would cost new, when I know it would be unnafordable. This book is an anthology of many writings. It is a treasure.

Thank you for helping me attain texts for my course. I may not pass it on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Norton Book of Nature Writing Review, September 21, 2009

I had to purchase this book because of the pricier ones in the bookstore at the college I attend. Great price, good content, highlights in a few areas, but those actually helped me out. A few things highlighted were addressed in class so I'm sure anything in there marked is worth paying attention to.

5.0 out of 5 stars College textbook, June 27, 2009

I needed this book right away for a college class. I could have purchased it through the college bookstore, but would have paid about $20 more for it. It arrived very quickly, so I saved the money and a trip to the bookstore. It is a wonderful book on nature writing. If you haven't read anything by Thoreau, Muir, Carson etc. this is a good start.

The book was in good condition, though I could tell someone got bored during class (doodle marks on the book). The highlighting is actually quite helpful as I've already had to read some of the same readings. Only drawback is that I couldn't drop the boring class b/c I already bought the book! Thanks for the timely shipping time!
