Back in the mid seventies a friend (Don Green) drove his 750 cc Norton north to Ithaca from New Orleans without incident except for the deteriorating rubber washers that were the heart of the Isolastic (as it was called) system to overcome the engine vibrations. To us Yankee fans of Brit bikes, Norton was largely a third place contender behind the Triumph and BSA brands. As Dan Morley makes clear in this book, Norton was never a huge manufacturing concern and usually made fewer bikes than the market would have absorbed. Lack of capital, labor woes, and quirky engineering genius types on board only compounded the problem. None of Morley's brisk accounts of the history of the marque will slow the enthusiast reader. The meat of this book are his excellent photos of decades of Nortons, many of which never made it to this shore. No motorcycle enthusiast of a certain age can look at the photos of Interstates and Combat Commandos without some wistfulness. Well done, indeed, Mr. Morley.
