Although this work bears the name of Sir George Grove, it is not a condensed version of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians ( LJ 12/15/80). Though largely based upon The New Grove , and retaining its relative scope and authority, the work is intended as quick reference for a broad spectrum of readers. Thus unlike The New Grove , it includes names and nicknames of significant works but no bibliographic references and few illustrations. While one might find the New Oxford Companion to Music ( LJ 11/1/83) as useful for illustrative material, the present volume is highly recommended, particularly for information on recent events.
