XP 64 bit is NOT supported,

When I tried to install this product I got an "incompatible operating system" error or similar. I looked at the box and saw that sure enough Windows XP is supported. Then I double checked to make sure that I had SP2 or later. I then called Symantec support who informed me that they do not have any product which supports Windows XP 64 BIT (which is what I have) and that they would not give me a refund(since I purchased it through Amazon). Amazon customer support was good to me though,(so far) and despite it being an opened software package has let me return it. Hopefully my comments here will spare someone the trouble that I had to go through.

This product does perform very well however it is a drain on the PC because of its intensive interrelation with all of the running processes. Make sure that you have adequate memory and a fast enough processor.

I have used NIS for a number of years now and been through many ups and downs. In the past NIS has been clunky and slow. Additionally it was very slow to install often taking 15-20 minutes or more. It has also been difficult to uninstall or reinstall. By the way, the easiest way to uninstall Symantec consumer products is to load your PC in safe mode and use the Norton Removal tool.
That was then. The new NIS 2009 product installs in a few minutes and uses fewer PC resources than any security suite I've ever used. It is fast and unobtrusive. This 10-pack is a steal at less than $20 per PC per year. As an IT contractor for a few small businesses, I recommend this solution to anyone who has a small IT budget and multiple computers to protect. It simply does the job at a great price.

HUGE improvement over Norton Internet Security 2008,

I wrote in my review of Norton Internet Security 2008 that I used the product - but despised it. The hit to my system's resources was just too great, and I turned much of it off as a result.
The 2009 version is MUCH faster - to the point where I am leaving all options enabled. The hit to the system appears to be minimal. The user interface is simpler and less confusing also. Big improvements all around. Be aware that the engines underlying Internet Security 2009 and Norton 360 are reported to be different, with 360 using the older version (i.e., performance problems). |
