Norton is back,

This review is from: Norton Internet Security 2010 & Norton Utilities (3 User Bundle) (CD-ROM)
Back in the 80's and 90's, Peter Norton was known for stellar DOS & Windows utilities along with the best Anti-Virus program available for the PC. If you needed to recover precious data from a failing hard drive (or an accidental format), get rid of a nasty virus brought home from school by your child, speed up your 20 Meg hard drive or simply work with the massive amount of data on your PC, Norton usually had something that would help. Then, sometime around the turn of the century, Norton/Symantec changed. Their programs became harder to work with, contained numerous bugs, ran ever so slowly and effectively took over your computer (can't help thinking that Microsoft had something to do with this). Whenever your PC had problems, Norton Software was usually the cause instead of the cure. Programs that ran like lightning before Norton Anti-Virus was installed, ran like molasses in the wintertime after Norton was installed. The thinking went from, "How can Norton help me?" to "How do I get rid of Norton?", an almost impossible task in itself - BTW, Symantec created a special removal program just for this purpose.
Anyway, knowing of the problems with Norton, I started using other anti-virus software such as NOD32, BitDefender, Kaspersky and many others, until about three months ago when I started seeing positive reviews for Norton Products again. At that time, with very little confidence and not expecting much, I downloaded a trial version of Norton Internet Security since my Kaspersky license was set to expire. After installing NIS-2010, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it did NOT slow my operation down, was fairly easy to work with and did NOT take over my entire computer. By the end of the thirty day trial, I was convinced that Norton was back. I confidently purchased a 12-month, 3-computer subscription from another on-line supplier and have been very happy ever since. Incidentally, Amazon now has it on sale for less than I paid the other 'supplier'. I installed it on three different computers running both Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro and hardly even know it's there - except of course when a threat is found. It scans when the computer is not being used and stops immediately when I start mousing or typing. It does update often but I can't tell you how many times per day because I never notice it happening. It helps me to avoid dangerous websites but if I really want to go to a blocked site, I can force it. It handles all of my website logins and passwords and allows me to easily manage them as well. The interface is slick and easy to work with. BTW, I did contact their tech support once and found them to be very helpful and knowledgeable. As for the other reviewer, I'm not sure what the problem is but I will tell you this: Before installing any Anti-virus software, be 100% sure that your old anti-virus is completely removed/uninstalled from your computer - it is never a good thing for two different anti-virus programs to be running at the same time. Additionally, if your Windows operating system has been running on the same computer for more than three years or so, it's time for a complete reload whether or not Norton is involved. Windows can become very grumpy after years of use and the only fix is to wipe it clean then load it fresh - or better yet, install Windows 7. Again, IMO, NORTON IS BACK! I used Norton SystemWorks and antivirus software for a long time. In the last couple of years I nearly gave up on Norton. The Norton 360 was awful - way too intrusive and slow!
Norton Utilities is a different package of features than the old SystemWorks, but it has all the essential elements. It fixes registry errors, cleans up the trash on your disk, and optimizes Windows registry. I miss the old "one button" cleanup step. But, this does everything that is needed and is reasonably easy to use. This version of Norton antivirus/Internet security has the essentials - virus, Trojans, spyware, and is a password protection program. It doesn't seem to slow the machine too much and it isn't overly intrusive. After the turkey "Norton 360" and the abandonment of "SystemWorks" Symantec finally got it right again. I run windows 7 on two machines and have this on both.

Everything works great. I gave 4 stars because I had a pretty hard ime installing Norton Utilities on my Windows 7 computer. The antivirus software no problem whatsoever quick easy install and integration with Windows 7, but the Utilities much different story, almost seemed at first like it was incompatable with Win 7 but then after alot of tweeking everything works fine. Definately recomend the Norton Internet Security, its easy and works flawlessly with Windows 7. But sorry to say I cant recomend the Utilities part of the package, very difficult install, time consuming and unless you are pretty computer savy not worth it.
