The Norton Comprehensive Literature Introduction,

This is a great, comprehensive book, for your short stories, poems and plays. It includes the cannon syllabus and many lesser known works. The poetry section is particularly stong.
There are also many great techniques on writing essays, and apporaches to writing about the selections. Great for college classrooms.

It's a very cute book and it's great for AP Exam prep. The anthology has a huge range of genres, styles, and themes, and can be great to help students pull out quotations and allusions during an essay. Great short stories include The Yellow Wallpaper, anything by Flannery O'Connor, and a variety of poems in different formats.
