This review is from: Norton SystemWorks 2001 Standard Edition 4.0 (CD-ROM)
This has Norton AntiVirus, Utilities, CleanSweep, and Web Services for Windows 2000, NT, Me, 98, and 95. [This was the last version for Win95.] The "User's Guide" has 13 chapters in 3 sections to describe the applications. Chapters 8 and 9 only apply to the "Professional Edition". Chapter 1 tells how to install NSW. You must first uninstall any previous version of Norton Utilities, Norton Crashguard, CleanSweep, Norton AntiVirus, or any other antivirus program on your system (p.15). You should create the Emergency disks on a different computer, one that has no problems. You can run the Emergency Disks after booting from the CD.
Chapter 2 introduces the programs and their features. WinDoctor can remove the error that comes from trying to load a now missing program. Disk Doctor checks the integrity of your hard drive. System Doctor monitors and analyzes various parts of your computer. System Information provides detailed information about your computer. File Compare examines the differences between two versions of a file. Norton Diagnostics provides a complete hardware checkup to identify problems quickly. NAV protects and detects harmful viruses. CleanSweep manages programs on your computer (p.35). Chapter 3 tells how to create rescue disks with critical information about your computer; it needs updating to match your configuration. Chapter 4 explains how to respond to Norton System Works alerts. Chapter 5 discusses the use of Norton Utilities to solve computer problems. This is the most important chapter in normal operations. Chapter 6 explains the types of viruses and how NAV protects against them. It tells how to maintain full-time protection. Norton CleanSweep can clean out unused files (Fast & Safe Cleanup), such as Internet buildup, browser cache, and unused programs (Uninstall Wizard). The Backup Wizard creates a compressed backup file of a program. The Move Wizard moves a program to another drive or folder on the same computer. Chapter 8 explains how to use WinFax Basic; it allows your computer to send and receive facsimile transmissions (with a suitable modem). Norton Ghost creates disk images (Chapter 9). It can clone an entire disk, one or more partitions, and create image files. Section 3 covers problems and emergency procedures. These apply to Windows 95, 98, and Me. Flow charts describe the operations (Chapter 10). Chapter 11 describes emergency procedures; this is the most detailed chapter. You should read all these pages and take notes. They recommend unerasing files, testing for disk problems, and creating and maintaining a Rescue Disk set. Chapter 12 tells what to do when a virus is found; there are three types of alerts. If an infected file cannot be repaired it can be quarantined or deleted. Troubleshooting the most frequent problems is covered in Chapter 13. [I hope you never have to use Section 3.] |
