Book Description

In the Shadow Territories of Cascade, all manner of nocturnal creatures attend school under the cover of the night. Basilisks, werewolves, nightshades, vampires, ghouls, orcs and poltergeists make for quite the interesting student body. For Norton, a wayward vampire with big dreams, his Career Day report spells doom, disaster and an unlikely adventure. Norton wants more than anything to be a lifeguard at Oracle Beach, a career his protective mother knows comes with a horrible price.

With his trusted friends at his side, Norton embarks on a quest that takes him throughout the magical realm to find a way to bring his dream to unlife!

This newest edition to the Cascade series has plenty of wild characters: a moat monster bent on retiring, a wizard imprisoned in a firehound's body, another appearance by the Flying Mummy and a whimsical crossover with the cast from Graham the Gargoyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, fun, magical, and unique November 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
NORTON THE VAMPIRE's dream of becoming a lifeguard is, quite rightly, dismissed as foolish by his mom and just about everybody else. When do people normally go swimming in the sea? In the daytime. And when are vampires most likely to burst into flame and die horribly? Yes -- in the daytime.

But Norton is convinced there's a way to achieve his dream. Maybe a spell to protect his sun-sensitive skin? He sets off on a quest with a handful of faithful friends and ends up getting into deeper and deeper water -- and not the nice kind of deep water you find at the beach! Just how much trouble can a vampire get into anyway?

This book is all about friendships, never mind that the group consists of a couple of vampires alongside a basilisk, werewolf, nightshade, ghoul, orc, and a poltergeist! Each character is colorful and well conceived, and the fact that the author is a fifth-grade teacher comes through in his depiction of Norton's nocturnal class (which, by the way, is run by a centaur). It's a fun, magical, and very satisfying read.

There's also a nifty crossover for anyone who's read GRAHAM THE GARGOYLE, since Norton and Graham coexist in the same magical world of Cascade. I understand that more Cascade adventures are forthcoming. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Share this Gem with a Child! June 20, 2013

Without a doubt, author Brian Clopper has found a way to teach younger readers the joy of books! Norton the Vampire is full of colorful characters from werewolves to centaurs, with ghouls and poltergeists thrown into the mix! In class, Norton's teacher (a centaur) assigns a project, each student must do a Career Day report, telling what they want to be when they grow up. Norton's choice causes quite stir because he desperately wants to become a lifeguard at Oracle Beach. And we all know what happens to vampires in the sun, right? His mom didn't mean to crush his dreams, but I think she did, in the name of love.

His friends?? They showed their loyalty to Norton as they followed him on his quest to find a way to make his dream a reality, against all odds and maybe not making all of the best decisions. There MUST be a way to help poor Norton, because that's what friends do. With determination, imagination and the help of an awesome teacher, can Norton live his dream?

What a delightfully engaging book, filled with magical beings in a magical realm that just happen to act just like true friends would, always having your back! Each character is colorful, dimensional, and like all of Mr. Clopper's characters, uniquely charming in their own way!

Children NEED books like Norton the Vampire to fuel their minds while allowing them to believe in the fantasy of make believe!

I feel like I'm always thanking this author for sharing his gift, but I mean it!

More About the Author

I am a 5th grade teacher in North Carolina whose comic book work has garnered praise from the likes of Lincoln Child, Mark Crilley and Piers Anthony. One of my projects, IMAGINATION ROCKET, even received an Eisner nomination. I have done numerous author talks on brainstorming with odd pairings, changing expectations and randomizing through both public schools and libraries.
