Windows 2000 Professional,
This review is from: Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (Paperback)
I found the book to be well laid out and written to allow a wide range of users to understand the operation and configuration of Windows 2000. The examples contained are precise and step by step so that the novice or expert can easily find the path to a well structured operating system in their home or office PC. The forward references found in the initial chapters allow the reader to fast forward to places of special interest or need and delve into the details or specific functions they are searching for. I believe this will be a valuble addition to any Windows 2000 users library.

Really helpful book!,

This review is from: Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (Paperback)
I bought this book expecting the usual coverage of how to work with Windows and some theory. I got a lot more. When I ran into problems with my printer, I was able to go into the troubleshooting section and get useful advice on how to fix it. I also found the MSMQ coverage helpful. The company I'm working for is looking at this technology and knowing how to set things up is a real plus.

Lightweight - not worth the cost!,

This book is more like a "Win 2000 for Dummies" book than the in-depth reference I had hoped for. For example, as an example of a "catastrophic failure" the author refers to a mouse failure during boot-up. There is little depth to the text, and critical issues such as modem sharing and the like are not even covered. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Very Informative,

The book was very informative. I have read numerous chapters in the book and felt I got the answers I was looking for. Its not a support manual so you cant turn to this book to solve most problems. However there is a great deal of info in the book that can help you prevent problems. The more you know about the software the less time you spend "experimenting" with it. Instead after you have read this book you will feel like you know what you are doing and what Win 2K can do for you.

Disappointing,

I, too, felt it was too basic for anyone who would delve intothis OS. I was particularly interested in help with the network components and his treatment was no help. It was ironic that his treatment of the network provisions was theoretical and "academic" but nothing about how to do it. The book from QUE, as always, provided much more useful information.

I have always been pleased with any book I have read by any of the authors. When they combined their talents to write this book they did us all a big favor. It is packed with useful information that even a new user will understand. The information in parts IV and VI were especially useful to me in my work. GREAT BOOK!

Too academic for me,

This review is from: Peter Norton's Complete Guide to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (Paperback)
I bought this book to help me set up W2000 and get my small network going at my office. I found lots of explanations about what this and that means which is helpful for someone needing more background info. What I needed wasn't easy to find, that is how to actually get my network going. I finally gave up on the book and called MS support and found that I needed to enter a user on both computers to make the peer to peer network work within the security confines of W2000. To summarize, this book is a good reference source but not so useful for actually solving problems in W2000 for the non computer professional.

I found this book to be exactly as advertised. The indexing was easy to follow and the book well written in plain English. There seems to be an understanding for the people that buy this book really need it. My enjoyment of Windows 2000 improved 100% and is still on the up swing. I can, without a minute's hesitation, recommend this book for the beginner and up; I was a beginner in Windows 2000 after all. Thanks for a great book.

If you liked Notron before this book is the one you can trust and like. Like before, this book is rather an understanding than a meaningless boring step-by-step manual. It was so wonderful to see how an outstanding leader perceives w2k. Again, this is not a manual like but a lecture like book. It deals with a lot of background story about win2k and internet too. I guess it is good for both novice and expert.

More of a beginner's book,
By Luc Richard "Luc Richard" (Moncton, NB Canada) - See all my reviews

This book is a beginner's look at Wink2k Professional . There isn't many chapters that really delve in to how Windows 2000 Professional works. For example: Chapter 6 explains how to use Internet Explorer. Well I don't know about you, but I think that anyone who is using the NT version of windows would know how to use ie. Peter Norton should stick to creating great anti-virus software.
