5.0 out of 5 stars Digital How To, July 26, 2010

This review is from: Boyd Norton's Outdoor Digital Photography Handbook: How to Shoot Like a Pro (Paperback)
These are difficult times ot produce books on this topic. With the ever changing world of digital and updates in software, who can keep up? Fortunately this book is written so that the basic needs are met as well as some very sound fundamentals can be established for the new photographer and those making the difficult transisiton from film to digital. Great job on the basics and combining this with the art side as well.

If you are looking for some specific method for removing things from a scene and making major alterations, this is not the book for you. But, if you are striving to improve your images and maintain truthfulness to the image, then this is one great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another home run!, September 8, 2010
This review is from: Boyd Norton's Outdoor Digital Photography Handbook: How to Shoot Like a Pro (Paperback)
A few years ago I got his "Art of Outdoor Photography" which I consider one of the best for either film shooters or digital shooters. This new one on just digital photography is equally good. He really knows how to convey information in an easy way and often with a great sense of humor. The layout and design of this book is really good. If I have any criticism its that some of the pictures might have been made larger on the page. All in all I highly recommend it.

As with Boyd's first book, this one is also quite good. It was Boyd's First book that help me take a large step forward in photography and to really enjoy nature work. His new book handles the subject matter well and is certainly a good book for beginners as well as a good review for old photographers like me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Job - very informative, August 24, 2010
This review is from: Boyd Norton's Outdoor Digital Photography Handbook: How to Shoot Like a Pro (Paperback)
I have one of Norton's earlier books, the Art of Outdoor Photography which I consider one of the best in the past several years. This new one has been a big help to me in getting started in digital shooting - especially in making extended trips in remote places. As in his other book, he has a great writing style.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to create your own photo workshop, August 18, 2011
This review is from: Boyd Norton's Outdoor Digital Photography Handbook: How to Shoot Like a Pro (Paperback)
I found this book very rewarding.

Boyd's book approaches photography as I am trying to approach it. He regards the use of a photo editing program as an essential part of the photographic process. I have found Photoshop to be a significant element in my learning to transcend snapshots. Photoshop enables me to correct the errors I make when composing pictures. I can crop pictures several times to find what interested me in that scene. I can flip the image, lighten/darken the image, even edit the image.

His selection of equipment is very similar to my selection except on a little lower price basis. Brad can afford a little more expensive equipment since he is a professional photographer. My equipment purchase must come out of the family budget. However, it is pleasure to find a professional carrying the same kind of camera body as I use - a Canon Rebel.

This book makes a fine field guide. Shortly I will be taking my annual trip to a landscape artist's heaven in New Mexico. I will travel with my camera, laptop, and Photoshop. At the end of each day, I can review my day's work and consult this book on how to improve.

This book is a fine practical guide to getting the most out of your equipment and out of your self-taught photo workshop. It shows you can make great pictures without an arsenal of lenses and the latest add-ons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Boyd Norton's Outdoor Digital Photography, November 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Boyd Norton's Outdoor Digital Photography Handbook: How to Shoot Like a Pro (Paperback)
book is wonderful, especially for a Michigan Tech Grad. I am going to try almost everything in the book for myself. Explanations are easy to understand and logical. The only exception I take with this great book, is the description of how to treat the size of the sensor as compared to a 35mm slide. An image from a 600mm lense in digital format does not look like an image from 900mm lense. An image from a 600mm lense in digital format looks like a cropped version of a 600mm lense on a 35mm slide. This treatment is not clear in the book. Again, the only exception I have with this. The thoughts on actually taking photos is outstanding.
