This review is from: Norwegian Dances and Other Works (Paperback)
This is an excellent collection that has become one of my favorites to play for pure enjoyment. It's well laid out and staves are sensibly spaced. It's a shame Dover has let it go out of print. While the "Lyric Pieces" are staples of piano collections, this volume features many pieces not as well-known but just as much fun to play. To cite just one example, the very first of the Op.17 dances is so infectious it's hard to stay at the keyboard without wanting to get up and dance along. Particularly enjoyable are some things which may be familiar to the casual listener in orchestral form, such as the excerpts from "Sigurd Jorsulfar," the 4 Norwegian Dances, and especially "The Bridal Procession Passes By" from Op.19. Full contents are:
25 Norwegian Songs and Dances op.17 Scenes of Country Life Op.19 Ballade in Form of Variations on a Norwegian Folk Song Op.24 Improvisata on Norwegian Folk Tunes Op.29 Four Norwegian dances arr of Op.35 Valses-caprices,arr. of Op.37 Olaf Trygvason, Prayer and Temple Dance, arr. from Op.50 Sigurd Jorsulfar, 3 pieces arr. from op.56 Two Nordic melodies, arr. of Op.63 19 Norwegian Fok Tunes op.66 Slatter (Norwegian Peasant Dances), Op.72 |
