My kids and I spent a lot of time watching the first seasons Survivorman as they were growing up. This show as a lot better than most of the other stuff on the air back then, helping to re-enforce the concepts of self-confidence, being prepared, remaining calm in bad situations, and it was something we looked forward to each week. Its the show that made me a fan of the Discovery Channel (something that has waned as the quality of the programming has drifted).

Its hard to believe that was seven years ago. I remember being disappointed (and the disappointment of my kids) when we found out Les had been sick, and wasn't going to be doing these any longer (and yes there is more to that story than what there is time for here), and was very pleased when I found out about his return to the small screen.

I had worried, that with the passage of time, and the strain the series had placed on Les, that he'd have lost a step. And contrary to the title of this review, he has. He makes some choices in this season that were bad choices, but wouldn't have been so bad six or seven years ago. You can tell he's older now, and while he still pushes himself hard and pushes through, you see he has the young man mentality in an older man's body.

Its an impressive display of just how much will power and mental strength you can draw upon to push your body beyond what you think its limits are. But from a survival show standpoint, I'd rather see things being demonstrated that show the right way, rather than the risky desperation ways.

Hence the four stars, and not five.

I really appreciate how Les takes a more practical and realistic approach to survival than Bear Grylls who chooses to do stunts that would kill someone who really found themselves in a survival situation. Overall I really enjoy the entire series and thought the 10 Days was amazing. I hope Les keeps doing the series.

Survivorman Les Stroud is back and has taken it to the next level by spending 5 days showing you what not to do, then 5 days showing you how to get back to civilization.

Admittedly, he doesn't make any truly bad decisions for the first 5 days, but he does make the most common mistake made by people in each situation (ex. staying with the car in a mountain snowstorm.)

All in all it's up to his usual level of excellence.

This season is VERY short--only 4 episodes--but Les rocks! I was so bummed when the original show went off the air, and thrilled to find this!
