Roar Hauglid's Norwegian Stave Churches is the best introduction to the subject! The text is typical translation and is therefore a bit dense and requires you to read closely (which you should do for any texts anyway!) but it is accurate and authoritative. The photos and plates are well done and is an excellent introduction to the subject!
