A surprising focus on just trolls,
By D. Donovan, Editor/Sr. Reviewer "California B... (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Norwegian Troll Tales (Paperback)
This was released early last year but deserves ongoing mention for fans of fantasy in general and Norwegian folk stories in particular, offering a surprising narrowed focus on trolls and revising and expanding a previous title. Troll adventures appear in both stories and poems by Norwegian writers including such famous names as Henrik Ibsen.

This book is an editorial nightmare, with accidentally duplicated artworks and such, and has just about the cheapest physical feel I've ever encountered in a paperback. Further, there's nothing to be gained from these rough-and-ready translations--cobbled together, as they are, with dim-witted recipes, jokes, and such--that can't be gleaned from the combination of Asbjornsen and Moe's epic work and Boose's comprehensive Scandinavian chrestomathy.

my husband and i purchased this book, along with "scandinavian ghost stories," while on vacation this summer. our friend liked them so much that we purchased a copy of each book for him here. this is a nice collection of stories for anyone interested in the subject - great bedtime stories for (older) children and grown-ups alike

This book appears to me to be an attempt to portray the popular image of trolls to America. The book includes stories, descriptions of how they were told in a family setting, discussions of folklore collectors, artists, and so forth who were inspired by the folklore, etc.
Despite of the fact that (or perhaps even because) this is not a scholarly but rather a popular book, this helped me see the folklore for what it is, as a living and deeply embedded tradition with a powerful and complex yet still living soul. The areas of the book which appear to be "errors" from certain scholarly angles actually contributed greatly to my understanding of and appreciation for this area of folklore. On the whole I would highly recommend this book.

Very interesting and unique. Magical trolls have a long and storied history as deliverers of moral messages and scary tales to kids of yore.

This book is a great insight to the tales of Trolls. :) There are so many different trolls and this book has a great representation of them. It's a great addition to any fairy tale collection.
