5.0 out of 5 stars Judy Collins' 'Norwegian Wood' Cover Is Enthralling, June 11, 2008
This review is from: Norwegian Wood (MP3 Download)
Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney has received a lot of press and not all of it has been good. It's amazing that with all the bad press that Judy Collins newest album has received, her rendition of John Lennon's "Norwegian Wood" is almost never mentioned. Did people just not listen to this track, or was it drowned out in an album of competent but safe remakes? I really don't know. All I can tell you is that you owe it to yourself to listen to this track carefully and often.

I am not a Judy Collins purist by any stretch. I am a huge Beatles fan, and I'm not shy to admit that. However, this song struck me not because of Lennon's lyrics alone but because of Collins' delivery. It's true, she sings the song in a steady timbre. Some may dislike that, but I found it enchanting. This track proved to me how great Judy Collins can be at her best. She didn't need to add any extra ornamentation, because her voice alone makes beautiful music.

Once again, this album seems to have been panned by many Beatles fans. But I think this song is better than the original version. As a Beatles fan, that is a very big statement to make.

I hope you'll check this out.

Enjoy.
