Book Description

May 1, 1992
This book is a replica of my father's original binder he published in 1978.It shows how to establish the perfect swing, which my father originated way back in early 1900's from teachings by Harry Vardon & Walter Hagen. This book will show and teach you every phase of golf, including many exercises that will help your game of golf. About 80% of golf pro's from the early 30's to the present have tried teaching this method but it's not the same as my father doing it. He was called the "King of Swing" by Henry Pippen the English golfer, and this was long before Sam Snead or anyone else got the nickname. In this book it will also show the difference between a concave and convex grip, which most golf pro's today can not define. After learning the short and putting game, you will no doubt cut 5-7 strokes off your game and down the road you will see 10 or better strokes bettering your game. This book has sections in it that need to be read over again to be sure you have the grips and what have you down pat.

About the Author

This book was originally written in 1978 by my father, Joe Norwood. My father started the game of golf when he was 15yrs. old and living in New York City. He was working at the department store Wannamaker's in the sports shop. One day later the manager of the store introduced my father to Harry Vardon & Walter Hagen, who liked what they saw in my father's swing and asked him if he would be interested to become a golf pro and learn to teach their methods. He said yes and away they went to teaching him everything they knew about the game of golf. They go him a job at the Brookline Country Club in Massachussetts where he played against great golfers like Francis Quimette and Walter Travis. He played a short time only as Vardon & Hagen wanted him to teach other pro's the correct swing and grips that so many didn't know. He was 18 yrs. old when he went to Brookline, then later had an offer to go to San Antonio, Texas. He was here for 2 yrs. and then went back to Boston, Ma., where he taught as a pro at the Berkshire Hills Country Club. In 1922 he had an offer to go to California, where he started teaching golf at the Los Angeles Country Club. He was there for 25 yrs. and then moved on to different driving ranges still teaching his method, the perfect golf swing which he perfected in the late 1920's.He has taught some of the greatest golfers of all time and has had more champions than any pro living today. He started out in L. A. teaching celebrities as well as golfers, so there have been thousands that have crossed his path. He started with Howard Hughes, Jack Warner(Warner Bros. Studio),Ruby Keeler, Paul Helms, Dennis O'Keffe, Efferyn Zimballist, Harvey Korman and so many more. In sports he had Walter Alston( Dodger Mgr),Willie Davis, Steve Garvey, Wes Parker and Bill Terry (New York Yankees). His first pro Champion was Harry Cooper when he was in L. A. and then went on from Babe Didrickson, Patty Berg Marilyn Smith, Betty Jameson to Charles Sifford for 25 yrs, close family ties to Tiger Woods(Does that tell you anything?),Curtis Sifford for 15 yrs.He has taught so many pro's the right &wrong's of golf such as Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Jimmy Demaret, The Mangrum Bros., Gene Littlerand even gave pointers to Ken Venturi and so many more like Ben Crenshaw,Chi-Chi Rodriguez, Mac O. Grady(who now teaches) and Ex-President Gerald Ford who couldn't help but hit the gallery until my father straightened him out, but then when my father wasn't around he started doing the same old thing. Many Pro's yesterday and today have stolen my father's swing and grips but still not down to perfection which you can get when you buy this book.

Great book. This is what I was looking for. There is an excellent chapter that tells a lot about how to find "the Slot".

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry Book, September 28, 2008

I am very sorry to have bought this book. While there were some useful bits inside, the language and poor illustrations more than eroded the value of whatever gems there were inside. A better book would be Joe Dante's 4 Magic Moves.
