Book Description

December 1, 2005
In the hyper-protective, safety-conscious world we live in, we can consider it a badge of honor that as kids we breathed in the deliciously noxious smells of damp mimeograph paper, model airplane glue, Wite-Out, rubber cement, Magic Markers, and Superelastic Bubble Plastic and lived to tell about it.

Very few things transport you in time like your sense of smell. It is the oldest, most primal sense and the one most tied to memory. And while we can identify over 10,000 individual smells, it is still the most underappreciated of all our senses.

The authors of Nosetalgia: The Smells That Take You Back present a way to help release stored and oft-forgotten childhood memories. This unique book features 96 pages of vibrant, full-color photos of a wide variety of items from the '50s, '60s, '70s, and '80s, from Lip Smackers to Odorama memorabilia. To complete the experience, there are 14 scratch-and-sniff scent spots, from menthol (recalling Vick's VapoRub) to coconut (Coppertone suntan lotion and the smell of piña coladas) and a variety of bubblegums, perfumes, and colognes to help trigger smell memories for the reader. It is a scratch-and-sniff book for grownups who want to relive the glory days of their childhoods.

People the world over continue to ride the wave of nostalgia that has swept the entire globe. Nosetalgia will be a coffee-table must-have. It is something people will flip through again and again and will tell their friends about.

4.0 out of 5 stars SMELL THIS, February 20, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nosetalgia: The Smells That Take You Back (Hardcover)
I am a very "smell-oriented" person; odors can make or break situations for me. Therefore, I was really excited about finding this book. It was rather disappointing with only 10 scratch and sniff(S&S) places. Additionally, at least 9 of the 10 were ones you can still find easily. Herbal Essence Shampoo was my favorite since I haven't seen that around lately. However, I'm sure since I don't know how the S&S procedure is accomplished, it's probablyl much more difficult and costly than I would imagine. In spite of this, I did still have a lot of fun with the book and would recommend it to others for a slightly different trip down memory lane.

2.0 out of 5 stars Be Forwarned!!!!, November 30, 2006

I ordered this book and received the version that only has 10 scents. After contacting customer service they sent me another copy. I received it only to find out it was the same exact version with only 10 scents. Be forwarned when buying this book that the description and picture shown are FALSE ADVERTISING! The book itself is very cute and fun. The scents leave a little to be desired though: redhots, herbal essence shampoo, vicks vapor rub, chocolate, pine tree, musk, baseball bubble gum and a few more. If you get the version with 14 scents though it sounds like they have a few other fun smells to make it more worthwhile.

What You See is What You Get or, in the case of this Trip down Memory Lane, What You Smell is What You Get.
One word: mimeograph
can transport those of us "of a certain age" back to fond memories of schooldaze - or, per chance to dread, if it was a pop quiz coming at us for which we were ill-prepared.
And other memory awakening words and phrases:
Bonnie Bell 10-0-6
Charlie perfume
Old Spice cologne
Mattell Creepy Crawley ThingMaker
and the smell of heat emanating from the Bell & Howell film projector.
The subtitle of this flashback booklet is:
Scratch It
Sniff It
Relive it
10 Nostalgic Scents.
It means what it says. Although there are many "take-me-back-to-that-time-and-place" pictures to conjure up olfactory memories - even a wide-open disected frog from Biology class - there are only 10 scratch and sniff scents. (which, in the case of the frog, or the included Kilgore/Duval quote "I love the smell of Naplam in the Morning," is a good thing.)
It's a sensational sensory trip down memory lane.
