First let me say that I loved this ice maker. It was the only source of ice in my home and I used it several times a week over the last 10 months. Around the holidays and in the summer it was used almost daily. It was loud as some other reviewers indicated, but something you can get used to. It made the amount of ice as described in the online descriptions. The color attracted me to this unit, as well as the price. It was cheaper than some of the other units I had been reviewing for purchase. This machine was exactly what I expected.
Recently, it stopped working. The unit won't power on consistently. When it finally does power on, the ice tray is malfunctioning due to a crack running up the side. I contacted the manufacturer, but because it was out of the 90 or 180 day warranty period there was nothing they could do except to recommend a local appliance repair shop. I don't recommend this model or this manufacturer. The manufacturers' user guide for this ice maker touts this as an ice maker to last for years of use. Well, that has not been my experience. I think the price of this unit is too much to spend for something that breaks in less than a year.

Seems that many of us had common problems.
I had this machine for less then a year and it stopped working, the ice tray broke and the motor will not turn on. The manufacturer will not do anything because it was out of warranty. They would not even do anything else to help me. I feel that this product is not worth the money and I would not recommend it to anyone.

I've used this ice maker every day for most of 2 years. I know its out of warranty, but when an ice cube got stuck under the tray, it cracked up the side. I'm willing to buy a new ice tray, but can't get any help to do so. I'm getting told that there are no parts available for it. So because a 2 dollar plastic part broke, I'm out $200. Up till now, I've had no problems with this ice maker, but if you need help later on, don't expect much. My initial review was 1 star, but it should be 4 stars for product and 1 star for product/customer service. What good is any product without some kind of customer service? Your not going to buy a car if the tires that come on it are not replaceable and when worn out, you have to buy another car, are you? $20,000 or $200. It does not matter.

I've been through two so far and neither has worked brand new out-of-the-box! Since I'm sick of returning them (and Sears only had a couple left on their shelves), I spoke to "Al" in customer service at The Helman Group, Ltd in Oxnard, CA. He said to bring it back to Sears for a refund (not a replacement) because there were a lot of problems with them and the line was discontinued for that reason.

While I appreciate his honesty, it's obvious that there was a design or production problem but, since they'd already been sold to the retailer, it wasn't Helman's problem! Great!

I promptly returned this. It took forever to make ice, was extremely loud, and after running it constantly from 5:30 am to 1 pm, still only had about 6 pounds of ice. Much better off driving to the store and paying $2 for 5 lb bag. Probably used that much in electricity trying to make it with this machine!!!!!

I purchased the Nostalgia Electrics ice maker to avoid multiple ice trays until my ice maker is connected. It takes approx 3 3/4 quarts of water and makes as much ice in each batch as 4-6 ice trays in only a little over two hours. Easy to empty and fill, the only draw back is the ice is still "wet" and needs to be freed up shortly after freezing to remain loose. An excellent purchase.

I WAS GIVEN THIS PRODUCT AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT AND USED IT FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY (JULY 4TH) FOR OUR PARTY. IT IS TRUE THAT IT IS NOT THE FASTEST ICE MAKER, BUT THIS THING WILL CONTINUALLY CHUG OUT ICE CUBES ALL DAY LONG. I LIKED THAT I COULD COLLECT THEM OR LET MY GUESTS COME AND SCOOP OUT THEIR OWN ICE. THIS REALLY WAS A HIT AT THE PARTY AND EVERYONE THOUGHT THAT IT WAS A VERY ATTRACTIVE APPLIANCE. IT ALSO HAS SOME FEATURES THAT I REALLY LIKE. I LIKE HOW THE ICE MACHINE WILL STOP MAKING CUBES WHEN THE BIN IS FULL, SO THAT IT DOES NOT OVERFLOW OR BACKUP AND CAUSE PROBLEMS. I ALSO LIKE THAT WHEN YOU DO EMPTY THE ICE COMPARTMENT IT STARTS MAKING CUBES AGAIN ON ITS OWN. I ALSO LIKE THE FACT THAT YOU CAN CHOOSE THE SIZE ICE CUBES THAT YOU WOULD LIKE (SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE). THIS MACHINE DOES NOT PRODUCE ICE LIKE A PROFESSIONAL ICE MAKER, BUT I FOUND IT VERY USEFUL AND RELIABLE FOR PRODUCING A STEADY AMOUNT OF ICE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DAY AND WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND IT!

I have noticed that many people say that they Love this product, but that's right out of the box, Warning, wait until they have a problem with it. Anybody buying one of these machines is headed for trouble. The company that supplied them has gone out of business and Nostalgia Electrics is not supporting it even though it is sold under their name. I filed a complaint with the BBB, stated below.

I have a Nostalgia Electrics RIC-100 Retro Series Automatic Ice Maker, Red, manufactured in 2008 by the Helman Group which has since gone out of business. But the ice maker is sold under the Nostalgia Electrics name and I need a part that is a simple part call an Ice bucket.

The ice bucket breaks easily on these machines and it is a common problem. I purchased my ice maker June 22, 2009 and it is still being sold on the market today. I can't get parts for my ice maker and Nostalgia Electric is not standing behind this product. This is a refrigeration unit only 3 years old, used occasionally and if I did not just happen to be a technician I would have to just throw the ice-maker out and I would be out of $250 dollars.

Since the ice-maker is sold under the Nostalgia Electric name they should be responsible for parts and service to the customer even if the Helman Group is out of business. Nostalgia could get the parts from Helman's suppliers. As it is anyone buying a product under the Nostalgia name but supplied by the Helman Group is without protection.
