5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!
Yet another amazing performance by the Mingus Big Band! The raw energy and power that the band plays with would really impress Mingus today, and should be the only band to play his music. Ronnie Cuber, Randy Brecker, Frank Lacy, and many others shine on another incredible collaboration.

3.0 out of 5 stars Win Some...... Lose Some!
I bought this cd when it came out in '94 on the basis of the title tune which got a lot of air play in St. Louis. The band is one kickin' organization.......dynamic,.....certainly energetic with mucho talent.

At first, I only cared for the title track and "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love", one of the most beautiful compositions I've heard. After playing the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing CD of the unique Charles Mingus jazz, December 9, 2006
This review is from: Nostalgia in Times Square (Audio CD)
This CD has so many fantastic songs. Moanin' is one of my favorite jazz charts, and no one does it better than Ronnie Cuber. The musicians in these recordings are truely some of the jazz greats. There are tons of solo sections, which will wow anyone no matter what they play. I am a bass trombonist, and Dave Taylor (bass bone on this CD) is in my opinion the best jazz bass trombonist ever, and it is evident in this CD. These songs by Mingus are truely unique in style, only similar to the Maria Schneider jazz charts. Musician or not, get Mingus Big Band 93:Nostaliga in Times Square.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best big band in the world, no doubt about it., September 24, 1999

When I first heard the band I thought the songs where, a little unusual. That lasted about three minutes. Ever since I've been hooked, and this is the best album yet. Anyone who likes jazz should buy this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, September 30, 2011

Anyone looking for a collection from the Mingus Big Band should choose this album. This album has a wonderfully diverse track list that is put together in a clever order. Having the album open with Ronnie Cuber's personal experience with Mingus at Birdland sets the tone nicely. There is a pleasant mix of emotions throughout the album while ending with gospel-sounding 'Ecclusiastics.' Excellent playing throughout, wonderful arrangements, and never boring. Thank you to all who were involved back in '93!

I am a jazz musician myself, and have played a few of the arrangements found on this cd. If you enjoy listening to jazz, then you need to add this to your collection. The soloists are amazing, and the band has a great sound.

After playing the disk over the years, I've come to appreciate MOST of the other tracks(I could always give credit to the musicianship). If I live another four lives, "Don't Be Afraid....etc." will never be anything but discordant noise! To a lessor extent.....the opening and closing of "Weird Nightmare " falls into that category also, the sound allusion to the title notwithstanding.

Basically, if you're a Mingus fan.....this is great! If you're not into the more experimental stuff, be a little cautious when considering this one.
