5.0 out of 5 stars A RETURN TO AUTHENTICITY (Thank you Em!!!!!!), May 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Not Afraid [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
The vast majority of songs dealing with recovery from substance abuse tend to be overly sentimental, and oftentimes downright cheesy, or so it seems to me.

This song is none of those things. It is lyrically tight, powerful, moving and most important of all for a hip hop artist, THE SONG IS REAL. Hip hop, real hip hop, is about authenticity. Authenticity made Eminem great. He rapped about his reality: white, born in poverty, drug addict, child of a drug addict, abandoned by his father, smart, emotionally troubled. He was who he was.

Over time, his drug addiction turned him into a caricature, a cartoon image from his fantasies. His lyrics got sloppy. His songs became boring serial killer fantasies. He became predictable. (I didn't even bother to buy RELAPSE).

This is a lyrical declaration of independence about taking responsibility for your life, facing your demons, and winning out, about staying alive against all odds, no matter what other people think or say.

Eminem could very well be another Elvis, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin or Lane Staley, but he's not. He got clean, and he's back.

People can say a lot of things about Eminem, but they can't say he's not talented, and they can't say he's afraid, and they can't say he's not back, not after this song. Bravo man. Bravo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Song by a talent who continues to strive !, June 21, 2010
This review is from: Not Afraid [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
I have Always liked Eminem for his talent before knowing any thing about his personal life , just for his style and talent alone , but after hearing of his own life struggles , he would be an inspiration to me , realizing the strength and courage it takes anyway to be a musician and handle fame ect , but then to add all the other struggles he has survived and you have even more reason to find him inspiring and a source of courage and hope . This his new song " Not Afraid " is like the best of great gift and talent as usual but with a message that brings hope and courage to those struggling with addiction and even those who arent . I love it " Im not afraid , to take a stand , everybody come take my hand , well walk this road together , whatever weather , warm or cold , " that is a brilliant , inspiring lyric one that every person could relate to , and if only we all did feel that we werent alone in life and with our personal struggles and could feel we were able to have someone walk that road with us ,this song helps give you that feeling , it is a great song , buy it . I wanted to say Thank you to Eminem for this song because I think it is going to help a lot of people out there . The best way to lead is by example so they say and this song is inspiring and I hope will also give strength and courage to all of his fans who are struggling with addictions. Thank You Eminem for this work and for surviving all you have and for having the strength it took for you to get clean. Thanks to Amazon too for their exceptional service as always. Peace out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A reminder of why we were fans to begin with, June 6, 2010
This review is from: Not Afraid [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
Eminem is almost violent with the way he raps in this song, not with the words, really, but his *intensity.* It's easy to see why he became the household name that he is, he's just raging in this and refusing to stop. If I had to pick one word for this song it would be STRONG. It's intense, he grabs your attention and jerks you around when you try to look away. On top of that, the message is uplifting and something that should get all the coverage this song is getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars The poet does it again, May 17, 2010

Haters can hate, but facts are facts! "Not Afraid," will be only the 16th song in 52 years to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was released digitally on May 3rd and sold over 380-thousand copies in its first week. That marks the biggest sales week for a digital track this calendar year, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Em, I felt every word. Enough said..

4.0 out of 5 stars Isn't Afraid, June 7, 2010
This review is from: Not Afraid [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
There is no doubt that Eminem has gotten a bit deeper into some of his songs recently. That was shown with Relapse, when he came back last year with We Made You and the somber-penned Beautiful. So he is definitely trying it again with a deeper sound in his words with with Not Afraid, the first single from his upcoming Recovery album. To him, it is about overcoming his personal vices from substance abuse, to his personal demons. While he still does have a lot of kinks to work out, it shows that Eminem has made better songs than he used to make in awhile. Hope he keeps it up, and shouldn't be so afraid.

Song: B 1/2-
