Book Description

February 1, 2012

For every twenty-something who's thrown aside traditional relationship books in despair comes a new kind of dating book. Renee Fisher, a refreshing new voice for today's generation, pulls no punches as she addresses the real, relevant questions and issues young adults encounter today:

  • How do I honor God with my body?
  • What's the deal with online dating?
  • Does it matter if my significant other is a Christian?
  • Is there only one person out there for me?
  • Can God use me in my singleness?
  • How should I relate to my ex after a breakup?
  • I think there's more to life than dating--but what?
  • What happens if I've made mistakes?

With her trademark wit and enthusiasm, Renee Fisher, Devotional Diva® and author of Faithbook of Jesus, urges young adults to take a closer look at the way they relate to God and others, showing them that every relationship finds its perfect example in Christ. Each daily devotion includes scriptural insight, prayers, journaling space, and questions for further thought from real-life twenty-somethings.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Renee Fisher has crafted a unique devotional that tackles core life issues rarely discussed from a biblical worldview. This is much-needed guidance for navigating the confusing world of dating--and an excellent resource for churches truly wanting to come alongside the new generation. --Lindy Lowry, editor of Outreach magazine

Like a best friend, Renee Fisher takes single Christians by the hand and sits down beside them. Just as the title suggests, this devotional is so much more than a dating book. This book should be on the nightstand of every Christian single who longs for the love of their life. --Crystal Renaud, author of Dirty Girls Come Clean

Not Another Dating Book avoids stereotypical dating advice that only seems to work for two percent of the population. This is a book for the average people who are pursuing God and His will. --Dan Kimball, author of They Like Jesus But Not The Church

If you're single and not interested in another dating book, you need to read this book. It's real, it's relevant, it's fresh, and it speaks the truth to a deceived generation. --Pete Wilson, author of Plan B

Renee brings an honesty to the topic of relationships that I found both rare and endearing. She communicates all of it with humor and heart. This is a great resource for anyone navigating relationships in the real world. --Jud Wilhite, author of Torn, Senior Pastor of Central Christian Church, Las Vegas, Nevada

From the Author

I met my husband while writing and editing "Not Another Dating Book." I was tired of being single (it had been YEARS), and I knew God had better for me but I wasn't sure how. This book is birthed from my heart and is my prayer for the single person who is longing for their mate and wanting to do things the right way!

4.0 out of 5 stars For Every Girl Seeking a Relationship February 29, 2012
Format:Paperback
Just like the title says, this is not another dating book. Fisher has created a devotional that reminds us that having a relationship with God should be our goal and focus, not the relationship with another person. Fisher shares stories from her own past, as well as comments from others regarding their relationships and how when we develop a crush, or like someone our focus shifts off of God and we began to idolize the person whose attention we are attempting to capture.

Fisher reminds us that our sole purpose should be a relationship with God, and to remember that He is and always will be our first love and that He will always be there to guide us and in His timing not in ours we will find the person who will become our spouse. Throughout Not Another Dating Book you will come across topics of idolatry, jealousy, and forgiveness.

This book is a must read for teen girls who find themselves caught up in the idea of relationships and boyfriends. You will be reminded of the one true relationship we should be seeking and to glorify God with our thoughts and focus.

This book was provided complimentary from Harvest House Publishers through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Devotional that Can Appeal to a Variety of People! February 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Not Another Dating Book is a unique approach to encourage those who are exploring the dating scene. Rather than create a book that offers tips or even more of the same type of advice that's already been dished out in other countless books available for singles, Renee Fisher has chosen to create a devotional that helps you wherever you're at in your dating life. Whether you're single, dating someone, never dated before, recovering from a broken relationship, tired of the dating scene, or eager to explore it, this book offers a very wide approach for a variety of people.

While it's definitely a massive undertaking, it actually works well. The aim of this book is not to offer more advice, but to offer the readers a deeper and more intimate look at their faith in a way that will influence their dating life. Every devotional seems to have been written in a way that it forces readers to stop and think about their own relationship with God, as well as their relationships with others.

I have to admit, I'm in full agreement with everything Renee Fisher brought up and said in this book. I found myself throwing out a lot of "Amens" as I read it. I will admit, however, that the idea that Christian women are attracted to bad boys when there are godly, Christian men available, kind of baffled me. I've found a lot of single Christian women complaining about how godly, Christian men who whole-heartily love the Lord, and long to honor Him in action and courage, are becoming a rare find. I myself have wondered if I might be single forever because I'm unwilling to settle for anything less that that rare find.

While this book is written for both sexes, the tone of the book feels as though it might appeal more to women. Not that men can't enjoy this book. There are definitely good messages in there for men. It's just that the overall book seems as though it would appeal to women more.

If you've read your fair share of Christian dating books, I'd still recommend that you give Not Another Dating Book a try. While the messages and advice may sound the same as the ones we've been hearing for a while, the book's focus of preparing your heart to align with God's is what sets it apart.

So singles, whatever stage of life you're in, definitely give Not Another Dating Book a shot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Insightful, and a Pleasure to Read February 1, 2012
Format:Paperback
(DISCLAIMER: The publisher gave me an advance copy of this book for free for the sole purpose of this review. However, no one is paying me to write this review. Now back to the review.)

Over the past couple of years I have had the privilege of getting to know Renee Johnson-Fisher. She has definitely talked me down from the ledge on more than one occasion (figuratively speaking, of course, but close enough to the real thing). I am privileged to consider her a friend, and I am privileged to review her brand new book, Not Another Dating Book.

As the title suggests, the book is not your typical "If you have sex, you will get pregnant and die" crap that you read in most Christian dating books. True, a lot of the devotions in this book are about fleeing from fornication, but it's not the entire book. The devotions in this book talk about what to look for in a mate, how to maintain a relationship, and how our relationship reflect God's relationship with us.

Renee is at her best when she writes about her history with dating and relationships. She's not afraid to talk about past relationships gone bad, and how she struggled with singleness for years before she met her husband Marc (which was when she was half-way finished with the book).

Thumbs up for me!
