Grade 2-3-- Six-year-old Hannah loves Dungee Farm Cottage, which is sheltered by a talking willow tree, but she must move to the city when her father takes a new job. He understands her anguish, and helps his daughter adjust to the house. Hannah is a wonderful character who sees the world in the sort of metaphors young children will appreciate. She speaks of the "Van-as-Big-as-a-Whale" opening its mouth and being fed by the moving men. Her sensitive, poetic nature leads her to make unusual and touching suggestions. "Perhaps, I'll leave my shadow behind . . . so people will know where I've been." Hannah beautifully expresses the feelings of so many when they are forced to move on, but there is comfort, too, in her relationship with her father and eventual acceptance of the new place. This charming story would make an excellent beginning chapter book. It presents the subject from a young child's perspective in a manageable format, using an easy-to-read text, large print, and frequent black-and-white illustrations. Although the occasional use of Briticisms may puzzle some readers, they do not interfere with the story or its tone. --Maggie McEwen, Coffin Elementary School, Brunswick, ME
