5.0 out of 5 stars My two-bit opinion is ..., November 25, 2000

This review is from: Not Ashamed (Audio CD)
It is not surprising the Newsboys would go this direction with their music. Just like "Boys Will Be Boyz" was a departure of sorts from the sounds you heard on "Hell is For Wimps", "Not Ashamed" is a more studio-sounding effort complete with heavy keyboard and electronic influences. Fortunately, it works!

"I Cannot Get You Out of My System" erupts the listener into a hook-laden sound that draws you into this CD. As soon as the incredible "Not Ashamed" starts, you are practically dancing along with beat ... okay maybe dancing on the inside (I really can't dance!). The CD continues with dance-mix pop/rock, pop, and the wonderful ballad "Where You Belong/Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus". "Upon This Rock" is just too catchy, but "Strong Love" is deeper than you think (just listen to the lyrics). "Dear Shame" rocks, and "Boycott Hell" is a terrific remake of the DeGarmo and Key rock anthem from the 80's. "We Come Together", "Love Comes True", and "Lost the Sky Again" wrap up the ten-song effort nicely.

Any doubts about where the band comes from (and I don't mean Australia either) can be alleviated with "I'm Not Ashamed". In concerts, John James would cite Romans 1:16 before the band exploded into performing this great anthem. As silly as they are on stage and in videos, these gentlemen take their faith very seriously.

Steve Taylor begins a three-album relationship with The Newsboys on "Not Ashamed". He is one talented and funny guy. Enjoy this record kids and adults. It will never age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD...a must have., February 21, 2006

Before this cd, there were 3 cds: in order, Read All About It, Hell Is For Wimps, and Boys Will Be Boyz. However, after Read All About It, they were advised not to continue their musical career. Thank God they didn't. This cd is unbelievable.
The Newsboys took a turn for the better after Boys Will Be Boyz, and they couldn't have taken that turn without Steve Taylor, the brilliant writer who has helped write many of their songs over their long career. With Steve Taylor also came an adoption of the early 90's pop/rock sound, resulting in a drastic makeover of the Newsboys that would define their style as it still is. Another difference in this cd is the lead vocals are shared between Peter Furler and John James, instead of mostly lead by James. Sadly, eventually, the Newsboys would lose James. It's almost as if they tried to prepare you for that truth for 3 cds, as Going Public and Take Me To Your Leader were also vocally shared.
Between the sellable Boys Will Be Boyz and their ridiculously popular Going Public came Not Ashamed. They didn't have Jody Davis at this point, so guitars were not yet there. Some guitars were played, but with Furler on drums, Taylor on bass, Pryor on keys, and James on lead vocals, there was no guitar player. Luckily, they got Davis in time for Going Public, which is musically twice as good as any of their previous albums.
Not Ashamed is musically fine, as far as early 90's music goes, and lyrically genius. For evidence, check out lyrics for Lost The Sky Again, Strong Love, and I Cannot Get You Out Of My System.
Graced with a few slow-ish songs, but mostly great upbeat pop/rock (but more pop than rock) anthems, this album is genius and will get you positive immediately, and after a while will get you hooked on the Newsboys. I would compare it to Going Public or a 90's version of Thrive. This cd is a must have, both lyrically and musically.

This is a great CD. Yeah it's older, but it is full of catchy tunes and has cool lyrics full of satire. This CD reflects the "Austrailian" in them more than their later music. It is very full of energy and guitar.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent debut by a top-notch Christian band!, December 13, 1998

The Newsboys Not Ashamed is full of great pop/dance beats and meaningful, searching lyrics. The title track is likely the most popular (and one of the best) songs ever written by a Christian pop artist. Definitely worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have For Newsboys Fans, February 21, 2000

Hey guys - this was the first CD I ever bought and I'm proud of that. I won't lie to you newer Newsboys fans...this is a little different sound from Step Up... or Love Libery Disco but it's amazing. I'm Not Ashamed has that bolt of energy and inspiration to keep you on track and I love "Where You Belong/Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" - it's a slow (not typical of Newsboys style) medley that just touches my heart every time. This album straight up rocks! Boycott Hell, Upon This Rock, and I Cannot Get You Out Of My System are also GREAT songs

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY VALUABLE CD., December 6, 2001
This review is from: Not Ashamed (Audio CD)
"Not Ashamed" is the second CD released by the Newsboys and it is a very good CD (especially for a sophomore effort). The Newsboys deliver a very exciting marriage of lyrics and music on such songs as the title track (one of the best songs ever recorded by anyone) and their re-do of the classic hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus". All other songs are good as well. Highly Recommended!

I originally had this album on cassette, but recently bought the CD because I love it so much. I like the positive message, the fast dance-clubish beat, and the in-your-face lyrics.

It's a really great album to listen to as you work out or walk. I recommend this and many other Newsboys albums. Not Ashamed
