Editorial Reviews

Review

"Dogs are, indeed, our best friends. This book celebrates the special---and often hilarious---bonds that develop between us. It will make you laugh, and touch your heart!" ---Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO, The Humane Society of the United States

From the Author

My life has been defined by dogs. I've had six dogs in my life, and each one was different from the other as brother is from sister. But all had a few
things in common. They were all rescue dogs who loved me unconditionally,
and taught me to love without limit."

Did you know that the last Sunday in April is actually "National Pet Parents Day?" Not a surprising revelation, considering the growing trends of dogs and other pets becoming an integral part of what constitutes a "family" in our society today.

The very funny Wade Rouse has gotten together a group of twenty fellow authors, comedians and humorists, about half of them gay or lesbian, and gotten them to talk about their relationship with their canine companions, current or past. The result is this clever, amusing and occasionally poignant anthology, showing just how otherwise-logical, responsible people can approach insanity in dealing with their dogs, most of them shelter rescues. We learning that "training" is a two-way street, worry about our pups being accepted by their peers at doggie daycare, compromise on sleeping arrangements, and - for a partner who isn't crazy about the dog - make it clear that an "It's me or the dog!"-ultimatum would likely result in a response he wouldn't like.

With a "Paw Foreword" by Chelsea Handler's dog, the anthology includes writings by Jen Lancaster, Alec Mapa, Rita Mae Brown, Bob Smith, Laurie Notaro, Jane Green, W. Bruce Cameron and others, as well as Rouse. Rouse is also donating 10% of the royalties from the book to The Humane Society of the United States. A great holiday gift for pet lovers, which I give five full stars out of five.

I am a doge person. If you don't know what that is, ask a dog person you meet one day. We are everywhere and I'M NOT THE BIGGEST BITCH IN THIS RELATIONSHIP by Wade Rouse and other is exciting us. This IS a dog lover's book and a good one. Stories or essay or tidbits about the writer's dogs. Funny, poignant, and of course true. I read this book in a day and found I had lived the same scenes in my life with my dogs. If you are a dog person ..hurry...fetch this book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

WADE ROUSE CAN REALLY GET RIGHT TO THE HEART AND SOUL OF A SUBJECT.
HIS LOVE FOR HIS DOGS COMES THROUGH SO PROFOUNDLY, I HAD TO WIPE TEARS MORE THAN ONCE.
I LOVED THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK, BUT IT DID WEAR ON A BIT THIN AS IT WENT ON.
I DO ENJOY WADE'S STYLE OF WRITING. VERY TALENTED. WILL CONTINUE TO READ HIS WORK.

I would be careful who you share or give this book to. It might offend some, even the most dyed-in-the-wool dog lovers.I struggled through to see if I could finish it and gave it away. More about the owners than the dogs is all I can say. Good effort and "good" reviews by most.

I enjoy reading other dog lovers' perspectives of their pets and knowing I'm not the only lunatic on the planet that thinks my dogs are fur-people. I like too that it exposes me to new writers that I may not necessarily want to buy a whole book of but can sample and it is on a topic that I love. I have actually found a couple authors who I will probably seek out now from this.

The stories in this book are written by many of my favorite authors-Beth Harbison, Allie Larkin, Sarah Pekkenan, Bruce Cameron and, of course, Wade. The intro was written by Chelsea Handler's dog Chuck. Well, it was probably written by Chelsea but it's in Chuck's perspective. It's so funny that I was reading excerpts to my co-workers...when the intro is laugh out loud funny, you know it's going to be a good book.

The stories were written about the dogs in the lives of these folks. True stories, most times with a comedic twist. Maybe that was mostly because we've lived through most of these scenarios. And it was great to read an entry that made it clear that some people are crazier than we are about their dogs!

Some of the proceeds are being donated to the Humane Society. I know there are some special dog people in my life who will be getting a copy for Christmas.

Like most people, I have a dog. His name is Theodore, and he's as much a part of my family as my kids. If you, like me, love your dog, you're going to love this book. I'm a big fan of Wade Rouse ("It's All Relative" is a scream!), and this book does not disappoint. Full of laughs, tears, and warm feelings, all pet-lovers should pick up this gem. How can you go wrong with Wade Rouse, Jen Lancaster, and Chelsea Handler?

This book is a series of short essays by many different authors. Most dog owners will enjoy it, but if you do not have a pet, I suggest that you skip it. You just won't understand our devotion to our pets. Each chapter can be read in a few minutes, which makes it ideal for those times when you find yourself waiting somewhere. Portions are very funny and it was nice to be exposed to some new (to me) writers.
