Pianist Mike Nock recorded a daring and refreshing piano trio album in "Not we but one". In 10 originals ("Cry me a river" is the only standard in the set) he proves that there's still plenty of life left in the traditional format of piano/bass/drums. His compositions explore mostly the upper part of the keyboard, as his style is lyrical and rolling. Some of these compositions seem to coast through the territory Nock already explored on his "Ondas" album years before, however without slavishly copying anything on that great album. Tasteful, original and daring : I guess that should sum up Mike Nock's playing on this album. Bassist Anthony Cox and drummer Tony Reedus are of course no amateurs either, and they stay well away from clichés throughout. This album just proves to me that although Bird may be dead after all, jazz is still alive and well !

This album if proof that the poll winners and their immediate followers are not the only ones with something to contribute to the contemporary jazz idiom.

Mike Nock is probably little known outside of Australia, where he resides, and New Zealand. But he deserves to be heard as he has something rather unique to say. He does it with his composing (most of the pieces here are his compositions), his rather measured meters and phrasings, and his incredible sensitivity. His pieces are an eclectic lot, very listenable, with complex structures and tempos.

Nock's playing reflects varied influences. Evidences of classical training appear in "Transitions." Traces of Bill Evans appear throughout. The title tune even evokes Vince Guaraldi. Nock can be very sensitive, as on "Kiss," and can swing hard as he does on a number of pieces.

Whatever directions Nock takes, bassist Anthony Cox and drummer Tony Reedus are totally in step. They support and complement, and are rarely out front. This is truly Nock's show.

For a different and rather unique jazz voice, check out this very fine pianist.

Mike Nock's music is very spare and special. His choice of notes and his sound is very individual and it takes a few listenings to fully appreciate what you are hearing. Originally from New Zealand Mike has played with many US musicians and now resides in Australia where he plays mostly with younger players.

This Cd is one of his very best and not to be missed as his thoughtful ideas and feeling for the music is subtle and complex at the same time. Highly recommended.
