5.0 out of 5 stars Heart and Soul - And a Bargain on Kindle! June 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Billed as a medical memoir, conceived to help people with similar challenges, don't let that mislead you. Robby Benson's "I'm Not Dead...Yet!" has something valuable to say to everyone.

The author's kind spirit, evident from the first word, is one you'll not want to disengage from. It's obvious why Mr. Benson and Ms. DeVito are devoted to each other, and their fans will find validation that their fondness is well founded. Robby's compassion and ethos are waaay off the charts, and well... everyone should have a Karla DeVito.

Enriched with medical information, harrowing cautionary tales, and links to essential resources, the story is not all clinical. There is a lot of endearing and entertaining autobiographical material before and inbetween episodes where the story turns to his health. By that time, you like him so much that it's become personal. You're there with him, and you care. He is brave and considerate to a fault, using his uber-compassion and humor to protect you from freaking out over the ordeals he's endured.

Robby recalls an exemplary, challenged and accomplished life, with absolute humility and good humor. For anyone with a heart, it is impossible to put the book - or the man - down. We should all be so lucky to have such people. But they're right here for you in this book.

Note - if you buy the Kindle version here: Due to the format's technical limitations, in the Kindle version most of the creative enhancements Mr. B has worked so hard to include are a couple steps removed from the seemlessly integrated way they are presented in the original. As you go through the Kindle book, various links appear to where songs, film clips and slide shows can be found. These elements are like a garnish to an already fulfilling meal.

Let me say at the beginning, Robby's amazing words have led me to one certain conclusion: I no longer fear open heart surgery, and if that fate should await me, then it's to the Cleveland Clinic I will go, with the happy knowledge that it offers the best possible care. I'M NOT DEAD...YET is in my opinion one of the best-yet, privileged glimpses into two American icons: Hollywood, and our Medical Community. It's also a very sweet glimpse into Robby and Karla's remarkable relationship and their close-knit family's struggle to deal with so much medical calamity.

What an incredible journey indeed! This book drew me in from the start, and continued to hold my interest through several days when I was unable to put it down. And how masterfully Robby weaves his 50-year show biz tale throughout the treacherous shoals of his medical problems! Wow. I had no idea! I was (alternately) laughing and crying throughout this all-too-quick read.

Part of the joy of this book is the weaving in and out of so many great songs, photographs and film clips. I'm old enough to have seen all of Robby's films during their first theatrical runs. Seeing those great clips brought back all the films and the social importance many of Robby's roles had, and have! Those scenes are timeless and fresh as the day we saw them on big screens in big theaters. I think this format of including so much mixed media is a great new direction for publishing, and really serves to provide a frame around the written words, much like the frame of a painting, perhaps. Hearing Robby speak the Introduction was amazing and for the remainder of the book, I kept hearing his voice, which is so unique. Just yesterday, Robby appeared on THE VIEW on ABC, and looked absolutely great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning! June 26, 2012
By Cliff
Format:Kindle Edition
You have never read, seen, or HEARD anything like this in a book before! I'm not kidding. Robby Benson is on the cutting edge of this new publishing. This book is not only a GREAT read, especially for someone going through what he has endured, but it is filled with beautiful pictures taken by the author, set to music written and performed by the author. Together they soothe the soul. There are also clips from some of his most famous movies, great stories about wonderful actors he has worked with, as well as heartwarming stories of his family, friends, and above all his wife and soulmate, Karla DeVito.

The book begins with the Preface narrated by Robby. His trademark voice immediately draws the reader/viewer/listener in. And from there, the ride only gets better.

Do yourself a favor, and get this wonderful book. You will not disappointed. And I have no doubt you will be recommending it to many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celebrate! September 3, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
In "I'm Not Dead...Yet!" Robby Benson steps out of the shadows pounding his much abused chest and declares that he's still here. And in this one-of-a-kind narrative he shares the amazing journey on which he and his family have embarked. No doubt he is a survivor - four open-heart surgeries will attest to that. There is a great deal of medical information providing both a condemnation and a celebration of the medical system, but what makes this book special is the honesty, humor, and faith displayed by Benson and his family - a true testament to the human spirit. In addition to inspiration, this book is filled with magnificent photos of Benson and his acting profession, medical heroes, family, and friends; links to medical procedures and institutions; songs (the soundtrack with the same title as the book is available from; life lessons; and personal anecdotes. You won't even be surprised when you learn that he has also included a bit of his own photography after reading "I'm Not Dead...Yet!" A recurring theme in his life is "Give it your all," and he certainly does that in this book.

This is a terrible book--not only poorly written but way too long (380 pages???) and using a stupid gimmick of little black & white photo illustrations in the middle of a sentence. Read more
