Loved It!!,

This review is from: Not Exactly What I Had in Mind: An Incurable Love Story (Hardcover)
After having been sick myself and close to death from an illness, I could relate from my own perspective. It is such a touching love story that I enjoyed every minute of how she was ready to give up on finding love and found what she was looking for. Her story of how through all she and her boyfriend who turned out to be her Mr Right went through, they stuck by each other with bonds of love by choice. I had hoped she would write a sequel but I haven't been able to find anything else by her. I would certainly be interested in any of her future books.

I don't think Rosemary Breslin set out to be the hero of her book but she sure is. Faced with a frightening mysterious illness, she manages to deal with it while ignoring it in order to get on with the business of living her life. She does this with style and humor. And she falls in love! I liked this book a lot and found myself rooting for and falling a little in love with her and Tony.

This a terrific book written by a courageous and talented writer. Those who point out how spoiled Rosemary Breslin is are missing the point. Rosemary Breslin is explaining how she changed and grew, in spite of, and perhaps because of her illness. The other thing that changed Breslin was her devoted husband, who taught her the meaning of unconditional love. This is a book I will remember for a long time. I hope Ms. Breslin writes many more.

Not exactly as good as I'd hoped . . .,

There's a compelling story here to be sure - a promising young writer falls in love while afflicted with a debilitating and mysterious disease - but the writing is cliched and superficial, and the author just doesn't do the story justice. The book can be entertaining as she's sometimes funny, but as I read I was increasingly bored and irritated by the author's shallowness and lack of insight. She describes her journey adequately, and if you're looking for a "patient's story" I suppose this one's OK; but the downside to me is that the story's all about her. There's little evidnece she cares about anyone's feelings but her own. For instance, her husband is a recovering alcoholic/addict, yet she seems utterly unconcerned about the challenges he might have encountered and never mentions how her illness might impact his. She spills many words, on the other hand, over her concern that the diamond on her engagement ring will be big enough to please her. To me, the author came across as a spoiled brat who's traded on her name and connections to be published. She happened to come down with a disease that gave her something to write about. If she is a wiser, more compassionate, more tender soul than is in evidence here I hope she's able to give it voice in her next book.

I have recommended this book to several people who are struggling with health problems. What makes Rosemary Breslin's problem unusual is that there is no cure or cause, and thankfully no one to blame! She is an outspoken and original writer who tries to put the ups and downs of some difficult situations into the best, funniest perspective. This is no Pollyanna, but a wise-cracking New York gal who's learned alot and can share it. It's a short fun read that I polished off in one day.

I read this book hoping it would "take me out of myself" for a little while, since life has been a bit hard of late. Well, it did that and more. Ms. Breslin writes with a strong, clear voice -- she doesn't sugar coat anything and never lets you feel sorry for her. Her battle with a mysterious blood disease at the same time she is falling in love makes for a moving, emotional tale. Her frank admissions of her less than saintly life bring her into focus and make her seem like someone you could call for an evening of pizza and a video.I highly recommend this book

I'd been trying to put a finger on what disappointed me about this book and the reviewer below hit on it - that Ms. Breslin comes across as spoiled and - dare I say it - somewhat shallow in her evaluation of her illness and its impact. I too am a sufferer of an autoimmune disease, though nowhere near the level of the author's, and expected to bond with her story. I'm very sorry about Ms. Breslin's recent death. It would have been interesting to read about how she grew and changed over the seven years between the book's publication and her death. I hope she found peace and meaning in the interim.
