Review

It is the wonderful tale of a 6-year old girl who is refusing to let bullies control her life. It is a must-read for any classroom. What a brave, young girl!

Props to little LaNiyah and especially her parents who took a positive and proactive stand to support their daughter to write a book no less. Go LaNiyah!!! --BlackVoices.com

I can identify with LaNiyah's story so, so much. And I hope her book helps to inspire other kids who are experiencing this particular pain, and lets other kids know that bullying is NEVER OK! --Afro-Bella.com

Hopefully her book can provide insight and comfort to kids who aren't so lucky.

More About the Author

7 year old, Author/youth advocate LaNiyah Bailey was ONLY six years old, when she was introduced to the world by way of NPR Radio it was after she and her parents appeared on Michel Martin's show "Tell Me More." Broadcast in over 500 cities; it lead a world-wide discussion in support of President Barack Obama's anti-bullying initiative and the epidemic of Bulling in America, March 15, 2011. Shortly thereafter, her phone began ringing off the hook. Major media outlets such as CNN, FOX, NBC, BET, WGN, AOL, ABC, Huffington's Post and many others throughout the world; including London and Korea. They wanted to know more about this young girl's "inspiring courage" after she penned the highly-acclaimed children's book "Not Fat Because I Wanna Be" along with her mother LaToya "Toyiah Marquis" White and illustrator Laura Pérez Ricaud.

The book detailed the story of fictional character Jessica. Jessica was bullied because of her weight which was caused by an underlying medical condition, which caused her to gain weight even though she was very, healthy and active. At such a young age Jessica had to endure some painful and unhappy times. Finally Jessica decided to stand up for herself.

The story was based on LaNiyah's very own true to life instances of being bullied and teased because of her weight. This is a great book for parents to read to their children and for teachers to share with their students, to educate them about bullies and the signs of bullying.

Young author LaNiyah Bailey writes a very moving story. In a courageous manner she addresses the issues of bullying and childhood obesity. She is an overweight child and both kids and adults at her school tease her about her weight. She learns the hard way that the saying "Sticks and Stones..." is not true.

LaNiyah is afflicted with a medical condition that causes her weight to be elevated. She eats healthy foods and despite this she is bloated. She sees a doctor who does tests and xrays. He is able to help her. As she explains this to the other children, they slowly begin to accept her for who she is, not what she looks like. An important lesson for all of us.

LaNiyah is a beautiful and courageous child. To utilize her pain and suffering and create such a wonderful educational tool is an act to be commended.

LaNiyah writes a pledge at the end of the book, I think it is important enough to copy here:
"I AM BEAUTIFUL, I AM LOVED
I WILL NOT LET WHAT OTHERS SAY DEFINE ME
BULLYING IS NOT COOL!!!"

Not Fat Because I Wanna Be is written by six-year- old LaNiyah Bailey, and the story is based on her own life. The main character Jessica is made fun of by her preschool classmates because of her size. She wonders "Why Did God give me this big tummy and bow legs?" This is a big question for a girl to ponder with at such a young age. The name-calling at preschool gets worse and Jessica begins hiding in the bathroom. Even some of the teachers poke fun at her. Then one day, Jessica visited her new doctor, Dr. Middens. After a few tests, Jessica learns that her colon was swollen and that she would have to take a special medicine to make her better.

Writing a book at the age of six is a major accomplishment, especially with such a meaningful message for children and adults. The old saying `Stick and Stones may break my bone, but words can never hurt me," is completely false, and both children and adults should know this. Not Fat Because I Wanna Be is a wonderful debut picture books that I recommend for readers of all ages.

A small child tackles a problem head on and serves as a role model for all children facing bullying, problems, or experiencing being different in any way. In this charming and sometimes touching first-person book, the author shares the secret world of a child suffering from a medical condition and from peer taunting. It is her world and her reality so it comes across with a rare voice.

It is a book rich in faith, family values, and a loving family rallying around a treasured member. The lessons shared by her parents serve to strengthen not only the child but also the parents.

It is also a blunt and open must read for children pre-school to fifth who face medical conditions, being differently challenged, or other issues. It is also a good introduction for all children and parents about the issues and impact of bullying. Real life and unmentionable conditions associated with some conditions (constipation, fear of tests, doctors, etc. illustrate that some things are just hard for anyone to talk about or deal with in a normal manner let alone while being taunted.

Perfect for schools, libraries, day cares, parenting collections, and doctors offices. Should be read by every teacher and child care provider to help them understand the diversity of conditions children face.

It does my heart good to read such an Awesome book by such an OUTSTANDING young lady. I think every school age child 5 to 12 should read this book with their parents and at school. Every classroom should have a copy and every elementary school library should have several copies. People are different but that does not make them less inferior than the next nor does it make one better. Every parent should teach their children about bullying and about being bullied. In this day and age, children are taking their own lives because of issues like this. Parents must teach their children when this is happening it's OK to tell the teacher, it's definitely OK to tell Mom and Dad! What saddens me is to hear teachers (grown folk) make fun of kids. That's very sad as an adult, but what goes around definitely comes back around. I applaud LaNiyah and her MOM and Dad for getting her message out to the people. GREAT BOOK, GREAT STORY!!! KUDOS TO MS. LANIYAH BAILEY!!! JOB WELL DONE!!!!

Not Fat Because I Wanna Be deals with a tough social issue that is plaguing our young people today. The issue is bullying. The main character, Jessica, is picked on because of her weight. In this story she learns to stand up for herself and how to educate others about her health issue. This book will be helpful for children who are victims of bullying and also give insight to those who bully others.

This book is a great educational tool that teaches a valuable lesson about treating others with dignity and not judging others by their looks. Parents and anyone that works with children should share this book with them. The Parent-Teacher Guide in the back of the book will encourage questions and discussions. There are also tips on how to prevent bullying and obesity.

My favorite part of the book is LaNiyah's pledge. "I am beautiful. I am loved. I will not let what others say define me. Bullying is not cool!!!" The book is a little long so if being used for younger children it should be read in parts. What an awesome book written by an awesome girl!
