"Not Given Lightly" is one of the finest songs I've ever heard. It's beautifully composed, starting out with snaps and simple drum beats. The light picking of a guitar is heard. I hate to call it "folky", but it partially is. The lyrics are moving and the song builds in intensity. A true love song for our generation. It's a shame more people aren't familiar with it. Do yourself a favour and check out this song and other things by Chris Knox. Thanks.

This is Chris Knox's most commercially well known song. Most kiwis know and love this song, often engaging in arm waving and hugging upon hearing it. It's alt rock for folk lovers (or folk for alt rock lovers), a bare vocal and guitars over drum machine. Its "stripped down to essentials and recorded in the bedroom" style represents Knox's long standing rejection of using sophisticated technology to tart up a product. With Knox it's all about the song, and so you get a brilliant piece of music recorded with the minimum of fuss. As with most of Chris Knox's work, it's a style you either love or hate. As for me, I love it. Chris Knox is one of the great pop songwriters of all time, though his aural wrapping paper is equivalent to a brown paper bag.
