Book Description

February 1, 2006

Jon Jackson, the famous film director, is found savagely murdered under the railway arches of Camden Town in a gruesome re-creation of a scene from his hit gangster film Bent. His death strikes a chord with many, including the staff at Lux magazine in possession of the last-ever interview with Jackson. Journalists Barry Hudson and Diana Kemp knew Jackson in the old days before he was a celebrity—Diana having known Jackson a little more intimately than most. As Diana is drawn ever closer to the killer, The Not Knowing vividly captures the seamy side of London life.

Cathi Unsworth began her journalistic career at 19 on the music paper Sounds. A music journalist for many years, she lives in West London.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"'I haven't been as excited by a new writer since I first read Ellroy or stumbled across the very first James Sallis... it's like picking up the first novel of a master. She is that good and better, that dark' Ken Bruen; 'The Not Knowing is gutters full of blood and moon, bodies and dreams, streets full of cries and whispers, secrets and lies - fiction every bit as fraught as the nightmares from whence it came' David Peace; 'Cathi Unsworth has long been an accomplished writer. With The Not Knowing she weaves together all her passions; music, cultural journalism, hip London, crime novels and edgy films - to give us, in the tradition of Derek Raymond and Ken Bruen, anglographies of contemporary London and of lives gone all edge' James Sallis"

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!, November 27, 2009

This review is from: The Not Knowing (Paperback)

I have never had a reaction to any book as intense as I did after reading THE NOT KNOWING.

If you're a fan of psychologically driven suspense novels, this is the ultimate.

The story is about a young journalist and her two partners, they recently teamed up to start their own magazine. The magazine's focus is movies and music.

The person who recommended the book said she was 'gobsmacked' and for the first 2/3 of the book it didn't feel like anything dreadful could possibly happen and I couldn't imagine why she felt that way.

By the time I finished reading it, I felt as if someone had grabbed me by my hair, and dragged and threw me across the room.

Unsworth makes you feel as though you are the one being victimized.

Bottom line, Cathi Unsworth is brilliant!
