Some nice NZ hip-hop,
By MC Oxy "Part 2" (Melbourne, Aussie) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Not Many (Audio CD)
Amazon really needs to get this cat's album up on here. On this single are the two most successful tracks off Scribe's debut LP, the crusader.
Not many - The remix! Features Con Psy of NZ group frontline and Savage of the Deceptikonz, another NZ hip-hop crew. It's a great track, with one of the catchiest hooks this millenium and some smooth as rapping from Con Psy, a heavy flow from Savage and Scribe's trademark voice riding well over a dope P-Money beat. It's a certified hit and a nice cut. The single also features the normal Not many, which is dwarfed by it's remix but still a competent enough track. An acapella and instrumental are also included. Stand up is the final track, and is the definitive anthem for NZ hip-hop in recent times, with a rock-type beat, another awesomely catchy hook (when I saw Scribe live this track was straight dope) and some nice lyrics all about representing NZ hip-hop. Overall, you can't go wrong with this single. With Stand up starting to take off in the US, do yourself a favour and pick this up if you're even remotely into hip-hop. It won't dissapoint. -P2

A good example of NZ hip hop,

Scribe is being touted as a shining example of NZ hip hop, which is all about the grassroots of hip hop. The large majority of it is intelligent and original, beats-wise, and this is a great cornerstone.
Seeing as the huge majority of hip hop comes from the US, it's only natural that it has an "American" flow to it -- I think it applies to a lot of international hip hop -- so "duh", yes, he has a bit of an American accent. Still people managed to overlook that, and send this album quadruple platinum. Live (the downfall of many) he is fantastic. While this cd is great, and shows what NZ hip hop is capable of, it opens the floodgates for a lot of other *excellent* crews out there -- there are so many, and that is what is *truly* great about this cd. As a New Zealander living in London, UK, and a fan of NZ hip hop, it's great to turn on MTV Base and see the (fantastic) video for the Not Many remix. Most of the beats are produced by P-Money, who has a lot of imagination; the exception is "Too Late", which for me is the standout track. Anyone interested in learning more can go to http://www.hiphopnz.com/, or Scribe's site at http://www.scribescribe.com/.

Complaints?.... Not Many, If Any...,

Yeah I dig this tune. The original is cool but for me, the darker, dirtier remix of Not Many leaves the original in it's wake with Savage (Deceptikonz)laying down meaner, more 'gangster', style which compliments Scribe's silky smooth flow perfectly. Scribe, together with P-Money, the South Pacific's (skinnier and whiter) answer to Dr Dre, make a great team. Not Many features on Scribe's debut album The Crusader, which I would totally recommend too (but cannot find on Amazon - sort it out fellas).

Too American!,

Scribe has got to be the biggest clown ever. He's from New Zealand and he flows in an American accent?! Fool.
