3.0 out of 5 stars Another one that needs time to grow on you
Like "soul Rotation" this one took time to grow on me. I still like the classic albums of the Milkmen way better, but this does have some good stuff on it. I especially like Leggo My Ego and Jason's Head. The rest of kind of average as far as DM goes and that's why I only give it a 3 star rating. I won't mention any names, but there are certain people, when they get to hell, who will have to have an entire extra circle built just to house them for thier special crimes. The guys at FOX who cancelled Arrested Development, for example, will be housed there, as will everone involved with the Larry the Cable Guy movie. Among these soulless creatures you would also find the rats over at Hollywood records who stopped pressing of one of the Dead Milkmen's best albums, 'Not Richard, but Dick'. If you could check out tracks like 'Jason's Head' , 'Let's Get the Baby High' , and 'The Woman who was Also a Mongoose' , you could see for yrself how good it is. But you can't, and so you'll have to shell out twenty-something bucks plus S&H just to get it used off of Amazon or ebay, but its worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars short, sweet and worth a mint/'cause as of now it's out of print!, August 2, 2007
This review is from: Not Richard But Dick (Audio CD)
one of the two great, "lost" milkmen albums, this was originally intended to be an ep so they could sell it at a cheaper price. it should have been too, because it clocks in at under 30 minutes, which technically qualifies it as such, but the blood suckers at Hollywood records still sold it as an lp. as a final kick in the teeth, they refused to allow any songs from "not richard..." or "soul rotation" to appear on the restless greatest hits compilation "death rides a pale cow" or "chaos rules: live at the trocadero," although our crafty dairy purveyors managed to sneak "if i had a gun" as an unlisted track on the latter. all of this is a shame, because this is a terrific set, bookended by two amazing songs; "lego my eggo" absolutely rips, and holds up as one of their best openers, while "the woman who was also a mongoose" is THE best closer on any of their records. other highlights are joe's mellow jam "not crazy," the pop-perfect "jason's head," and rods' "the infant of prague customized my van." this is also dean's favorite album, and it's held in high regard by rod and joe as well. hopefully, one day Hollywood will re-release "soul rotation" and "not richard..." like Wind-Up (formerly Grass records) re-released those first two Wrens albums; these two deserve it just as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Under-rated Album, June 10, 2004
This review is from: Not Richard But Dick (Audio CD)
This album is one that took no time to grow on me. I would always buy the Milkmen albums the day they were released. I thought this was an instant classic. "I Dream of Jesus" is hilarious. Maybe my maturity was in step with DM, but I was glad their style evolved from album to album, not simply rehashing the same songs each time out. This album is tight, and I rank it with BIG LIZARD and BEELZEBUBBA as best albums. It's under 30 minutes and continues their perusal of religion, philosophy, and the woman who was also a mongoose.

As soon as I heard this short 10 track album by the Dead Milkmen, it immediately reminded me of the classic stuff from the first 5 albums. Their trademark humor and catchy sing along melodies are all here (I dare you to not sing along to "I Dream of Jesus"). The album that came before this, "Soul Rotation", was definitely a change into more "mature" (what's that mean?) territory, but nonetheless interesting and worth seeking out (good luck, it's hard to find just like Not Richard, But Dick). I won't say that "Not Richard" is as essential as must haves like "Eat Your Paisley" and "Beelzebubba", but it definitely would only improve your Dead Milkmen collection if you had it, hardcore fans should be delighted, unless they already have it, then they're probably already delighted. I'm delighted.

Collect them All...like right now:
Big Lizard in my Backyard
Eat Your Paisley
Bucky Fellini
Beelzebubba
Metaphysical Graffiti
Soul Rotation
Not Richard, but Dick
Chaos Rules: Live at the Trocadero
Stoney's Extra Stout (Pig)

Dave Blood (Rest in Peace) and to the Dead Milkmen...we miss you and thanks.

If you like The DM, you'll like this. Mongoose is one of my favorites. Treat yourself, you won't regret it. Do not judge it until you have listened to it 8.5 times.

Another great album by the dead milkmen. MUST HAVE. Creative. Fun. Enlightening. It takes a "special" person to truly recognize how talented and timeless this band is. Maybe that's you. It wouldn't hurt to find out.

I don't think anyone will be won over to the band by this one. It's probably their worst as a whole.
