5.0 out of 5 stars More Than a One Hit Wonder
OK. Everyone knows Walter Egan for his hit "Magnet & Steel." Indeed it is a great song. You'll be treated to some great pop-rock stuff here. 3.0 out of 5 stars Stevie Nicks track is worth the buy.
This cd is from the late 1970's and Stevie Nicks, from Fleetwood Mac, sings background on the song Magnet and Steel. I would suggest buying this just for that track alone before they stop making this cd and it goes out of print permanently.

OK. Everyone knows Walter Egan for his hit "Magnet & Steel." Indeed it is a great song. You'll be treated to some great pop-rock stuff here. Besides the hit, tracks that should have been hits are also included: "The Blonde in the Blue T-Bird" is one of my favorites and for some reason it makes me think of Suzanne Summers in the (white) T-Bird from the movie "American Graffitti." The track "Hot Summer Nights" was probably the next single from this album, but guess what? A group called "Night" released it and that version became the hit.

Now that this is on CD, Walter's "Fundamental Roll" and "Hi-Fi" should also be issued.

5.0 out of 5 stars A desert island disk!!!, October 6, 2000

I first bought this album back in the 70's and became an instant fan! The "Not Shy" album rates as my favorite album of all time! Every song is a winner, not just two or three songs. They are timeless, uplifting, bouncy and harmonic. Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks helped produce this album and while their influence shows, Walter's talents help push this album beyond just a Fleetwood Mac clone. Put this cd into your car's cd player and you will be singing along to "Blonde in the Blue T-Bird" and "Finally Found a Girlfriend."

5.0 out of 5 stars "Magnet & Steel" was just the tip of the iceberg here..., July 31, 2004
This review is from: Not Shy (Audio CD)
Walter Egan on his solo projects was pure California sunshine, with a bit of well-utilized help from his friends Lindsey Buckingham & Stevie Nicks, so some of the material tends to sound close to Fleetwood Mac in overall style. Not that there's anything wrong with that! This is some of the finest stuff from that era and really has held up well over the years. Do yourself a favor: if you purchase this album, you owe it to yourself to hunt down his first, "Fundamental Roll". Together these two albums are excellent, fun to listen to and totally captivating from start to finish. If all you think of when you hear the name Walter Egan is "Magnet & Steel", you're really cheating yourself. Songs like "The Blonde in the Blue T-Bird", "Hot Summer Nights" (and his version far outshines the hit single version by Night a year or two later, HIS is the one that should have been screaming out of billions of radios) and from the earlier album, "Only the Lucky", "Tunnel O' Love" and "Yes I Guess I Am" are just proof that there needs to be more justice on the charts and on the air. In a more perfect world, every one of these songs would be huge hits. There are unsung heroes apart from their one huge solo hit single...Jay Ferguson is one...Walter Egan is definitely another. Buy this album, You deserve it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Bought it in 1978!, February 17, 2000

That's right. I was a fan before anyone really knew Stevie Nicks was on the album. I bought all the other albums by Walter Egan after that, and know all the songs like they are friends. The content for Not Shy is not typical 70's music, and is very listenable NOW. I think it is fabulous that a whole new group of fans are discovering the true talent of these artists, and the incredible ability as songwriters that they possess!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Magnet and Steel" is sooooo sexy!!!, December 15, 1998

I think "Magnet and Steel" is one of the greatest singles of the 1970's!! This is one of the sexiest songs! Why is that!! Perhaps the primative yet simple imagery? Walter Egan is such an under rated song writer and musician. No else else my age knows who he is and it is a shame!

5.0 out of 5 stars Haha! I own the promo-copy of this on vinyl, September 25, 2003

Whilst venturing through antique stores in St. Augustine, I came across a promo copy of this album in pristine condition selling for $2.00. I didn't really think about Walter Egan's connection with Lindsey Buckingham at the time of the purchase(I'm a HUGE Fleetwood Mac fan)...but it did cross my mind when I got home, which further enticed me to glance at the "credits". Turns out Lindsey produced this album. I was already familiar with the song Magnet and Steel, and was never really sure if Lindsey and Stevie did back-up, until I listened to Finally Find a Girlfriend, where Stevie's just belting away in the background. I guess what I'm trying to say is...this album is awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent!!, March 15, 1999
By A Customer

Crystalline California 70's pop at its finest!! The vocals are strong, playing is tight and the music is wonderfully arranged (w/help from Lindsey Buckingham) This is a terrific set of well written, very melodic songs that will come as a pleasant revelation to listeners who only know "Magnet & Steel", The album isn't just a mere Fleetwood Mac clone (which is what Egan was called back then-unfairly.) With the albums re-release on CD and "Magnet & Steel" featured in several soundtracks in the 90's, particurally Boogie Nights, Walter Egan's music may see some new life!!

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT. Now bring on "Hi-Fi.", May 3, 1999

I looked forward for years to the CD release of this classic. But as great as it is, "Hi-Fi" (his follow-up release) was always my favorite. Hopefully this better-than-the-original "sequel" is forthcoming!! Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect pop song, October 29, 1998

Nothing comes near the melody of "Magnet & Steel." It combines the music of 1970's Fleetwood Mac with the lyrical genius of Walter Egan.

Great guitar solo in the middle.
