From the Inside Flap

EXCERPT FROM CATALOG Slammed doors, rolled eyes, exasperated huffs-you've probably experienced one or all of these if you have a teen in the house. What happened? You used to be their idol and could do no wrong; now suddenly you're the stupidest person on the planet. Your teen might never have told you that to your face, but chances are they've thought it. It's just human nature. It's part of their need to grow up into their own individual and to move away from the nest. But don't worry, there is hope. You can become a Not-So-Stupid Parent when you learn some things about communicating with teens. For example, in Stupid Parents: Why They Just Don't Understand and How You Can Help, I talked to your teens about living under authority. Once teens understand that they can't fight you or get away from your authority, they have to start to learn how to manage communication in a more healthy way. In this book we'll take a look at how you and your teen interact from that same perspective of living under authority, and you'll see a move toward more win-win situations and a departure from the lose-lose battles of yesterday.

From the Back Cover

Teenagers have two different categories when it comes to parents: 1. Stupid 2. Not-so-stupid At some point in their lives all teens are in conflict with their parents, and how you handle that conflict will make you a stupid parent or a not-so-stupid one. When it comes to teens it's hard to know what to do. The sweet baby you brought home seems to have changed into another being. But don't worry. There is hope. Not-So-Stupid Parents and its teen companion book Stupid Parents bring teens and parents together to help them learn to understand one another as never before. In Not-So-Stupid Parents you'll learn how to: •stop the yelling •decode teen-speak (or what that silence really means) •find the balance between overprotection and permissiveness •perfect the art of negotiation while still being the adult It might not seem like it today, but there is a way you both can win. Not-So-Stupid Parents will help you reconnect with your kids to show them that you're not so stupid after all. Hayley DiMarco is chief creative officer and founder of Hungry Planet, where she writes and creates cutting-edge books that connect with the multitasking mind-set. She has written and co-written numerous bestselling books for both teens and adults, including Dateable, Mean Girls, Marriable, and Stupid Parents. Hayley has also spoken at conferences like Women of Faith. She and her husband, Michael, live in Nashville, Tennessee.

More About the Author

Hayley DiMarco is the best-selling author of more than thirty books, including Dateable, Marriable, Mean Girls, The Woman of Mystery, and Cupidity. She spent the early part of her career working for a little shoe company called Nike in Portland, Oregon and Thomas Nelson Publishers in Nashville, Tennessee.

This review is from: Not-So-Stupid Parents: Why Your Kids Think You're Weird and How to Prove Otherwise (Paperback)
Now that 3/4ths of my children have flown the nest, I discover this book! Learning to understand where your teen is coming from and coaxing what they are thinking from them can be so much easier. Trial and error, frustration and yelling, grounding and throwing up your hands in exasperation don't have to be your status quo as the parent of a teen. Learn to communicate and how to encourage them too. Thank you Hayley DiMarco. It's a little late for us, but just in time for many.
