Editorial Reviews

Review

"Taken together, prose and pictures accurately and movingly evoke what it was (and is) like to spend time, eating and awaiting a train, in this lovely old station." -- David Shaw, Los Angeles Times Book Review, Jan. 27, 1980

"The Gare de Lyon book is an absolute beauty--both drawings and introduction. My pleasure in it is diminished only by envy." -- Dec. 18, 1979 letter from James Stevenson, artist/writer then with The New Yorker

"The ornate restaurant of the Gare de Lyon, overlooking the great glassed-in train shed where the Mistral leaves for the Cote d'Azur, is one of the delicious places of Paris, from an architectural as well as a culinary point of view. Both the cuisine and the ambiance, hardly changed since the bel epoque, are evoked in Not a Station But a Place. It's a delightful collection of drawings, collages. and written notes, some done on menus, by Judith S. Clancy, whose deft, spirited original graphics are currently being shown at Brustin Workshop Gallery.

"The book provides an added treat in a memoir of this golden dining room by M.F.K. Fisher, as succulent as the souffle of shellfish and mushrooms she enjoyed there, together with a Grand Cru Chablis, and further seasoned by a remembrance of her friend Janet Flanner." -- Allan Temko, San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle, Jan. 13, 1980

5.0 out of 5 stars Delectable writing, graceful drawings, July 30, 2009
By
Some of the most delectable writing in English about the pleasures of France, including its cuisine, came from the typewriter of M.F.K. Fisher. Therefore it's not surprising that when she suggested that her friend Judith Clancy (who later did the drawings for Peter Mayle's best-selling "A Year in Provence" and "Toujours Provence") draw the bel epoque Gare de Lyon train station and its ornate Train Bleu restaurant a charming book would be the result. Clancy's drawings, collages and artist's notes, introduced by Mrs. Fisher's text, transport the reader to another enchanting time and place.
