A Great Companion Piece to the Thomas Guide, February 24, 2009
This review is from: Not for Tourists Guide to Los Angeles (Paperback)
If you, or someone you know, is moving to Los Angeles, a great gift to give would be the Not for Tourists Guide to Los Angeles along with the Thomas Guide map.
The NFT guide is a chatty, relaxed tourist-type book geared for residents. Almost like a sassy Yellow Pages directory, its lists everything from the closest government office to the nearest sports facilities and art galleries. There's even a chapter devoted to nearly every mall in the greater LA area, including descriptions of the malls' foodcourt and pros and cons of the parking structures. (I was glad to see I wasn't the only one to find the parking garage at Westside Pavilion to be the most surreal urban nightmare in Southern California.)
The biggest drawback to the NFT guide is the maps. While each is headed by a fascinating description of the neighborhood, many streets on the maps aren't identified and are so littered with icons representing liquor stores, gyms, grocery stores, video stores, movie theatres, pet stores, coffee shops, schools, etc., that any usefulness the maps could have provided is obliterated. On top of that, no cross streets are provided along with the addresses, so reading that La Velvet Margarita Cantina is located at 1612 N. Cahuenga Blvd is useless using NFT's Hollywood map.
But that's where the Thomas Guide comes in handy! It's simply the greatest map out there, and paired with the Not for Tourists Guide, one will be in safe and providing hands.

Maps and internet search results on paper, July 18, 2009
This review is from: Not for Tourists Guide to Los Angeles (Paperback)
This book is a collection of online street maps with places of interest listed. There's barely any qualitative review of venues and only sparse tips on making your way as a local. Little effort goes toward revealing paths less traveled, despite the claim that this guide is unique among others. The writing is tediously hip, with a library described as working "kind of like Netflix." The maps though are very clear, and the book layout is more handy than the accordion-folded type. If you're looking for an insiders' guide to LA though, look elsewhere.

Handy, February 11, 2009
This review is from: Not for Tourists Guide to Los Angeles (Paperback)
This book is great as an additional tool when navigating Los Angeles. It has maps split up into neighborhoods, and within each neighborhood a list of places to go and eat. It also contains divided sections that list all the libraries, post offices, etc. around town. My favorite part of NFT, though, is the section in the back filled with LA trivia. There's also a schedule of major events for the next few months, some events I never knew about but now am dying to go to.
It's not a vital book to own. A lot of what's in this book can be found in a Thomas Guide and a Zagat guide, but this is a book that combines those things with a lot of personality and an easy to read format. I only wish they included reviews of the restaurants in here the way they do on the website. It lists the price range of the restaurants, but no star rating to tell you whether or not it's worth going.
