Book Description

This second collection of humorous, satiric verse has a wide range of topics from "Adam's Rib" to "Virtual Reality." It is pithy, witty, intelligent and immediately quotable, the kinds of topics people love to post on bulletin boards.

About the Author

During his 35 years as Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and as an author and consultant to international agencies, Leslie Lipson has followed his muse, penning his non-academic thoughts in light verse.

His work, The Great Issues Of Politics, which has been in print for 43 years, has been translated into eight languages and is used in universities around the world. Among his other published works are The Democratic Civilization, which also has been widely translated and was recently reissued in Turkey, and The Ethical Crises of Civilization (Sage Publications 1993).

He came to the USA on a Commonwealth Fund Fellowship from Aalliol College, Oxford University, where he was a senior scholar, and took his doctorate from the University of Chicago. The University of California has honored him with the "Berkeley Citation."

In addition to his academic pursuits, Leslie Lipson is known nationally for his 13 years of participation in National Public Television's weekly "World Press" program, on which he reported the British Press.

He has published an earlier collection of light verse entitled I Do Not Itch to Etch (Davro Press 1987). All the verses in this volume were written since then.

He is presently Academic Director of the Fromm Institute at the University of San Francisco. He is frequently invited to speak on radio-TV to various organizations, among them the Commonwealth Club and the World Affairs Council. In addition he has lectured for USIA and other organizations in Europe, Africa and Asia.

From Chapter 1: Rush-Hour
When it's five after five and you feel half alive
and the office has left you all frazzled,
And you ache for the house with the kids and your spouse,
and just thinking of home you're bedazzled;....
Now the traffic is merging with autos converging
from two lanes to one without leeway;
This is when you start inching and you'd gladly be lynching
that bastard ahead of you squeezing - etc.

From Chapter 2: The Yuppie: A Socio-Political Profile
When Porsche or BMW Within a garage sits,
There is a value system which Its owner often fits.

This means some quiche and chanterelles And symphony subscriptions,
Plus trips to the psychiatrist For regular prescriptions.

It means a drive to reach the top, But not be feeling sadder
If treading on another's toes Is how one climbs the ladder. (continues)
