Book Description

Jeanne Cooper, the Emmy Award-winning American actress best known for her portrayal of Katherine Chancellor on the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless, recounts the steps and missteps of her eight-decade career in Not Young, Still Restless. Exploring a career that began with the birth of a phenomenon called television, Cooper’s life story co-stars a cast of characters that reads like a who’s-who of Hollywood’s Golden Age:  Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis, Henry Fonda, and Shelley Winters, to name just a few. Intimate, honest, and inspiring, Not Young, Still Restless is a fascinating memoir of a life in daytime drama—and proof positive that that growing older doesn’t have to mean giving up.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The New York Times bestselling memoir from one of daytime television's most beloved actresses

Three or four days a week, Jeanne Cooper drives from her Hollywood Hills home to the job she's held for more than three decades: bringing life to the character of Katherine Chancellor, who—along with Jeanne herself—has become a legend in the world of daytime television and its number-one show, The Young and the Restless.

Now, in this rich and thoughtful memoir, fans will get to know the woman behind the iconic character. With her signature fearlessness, honesty, and humor, Jeanne chronicles her long tenure in Hollywood and the ups and downs of an incredible life, from working with legendary film and television stars to the breakup of a marriage that produced the three great loves of her life—her daughter and two sons—before it ended, leaving her a single working mother. She also speaks openly about her battles to overcome alcoholism, defeat breast cancer, and age gracefully in Hollywood, a process that made her the first reality-television star when her character's (and her own) face-lift was filmed live on The Young and the Restless.

In Not Young, Still Restless, the Emmy Award-winningactress inspires readers with her ability not only to survive but to thrive as an octogenarian in today's ever-changing Hollywood.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Grand-Dame of Daytime Television" July 31, 2012
Format:Hardcover
"Not Young, Still Restless" is the wonderful and insightful biography of legendary actress Jeanne Cooper, known to millions worldwide as the rich and powerful Katherine Chancellor on "The Young and the Restless", the #1 soap opera in the U.S. since 1988.

In the book Jeanne discusses her entire life from being raised part Indian to be molested not once, but twice as a little girl and how that had a severe effect on her life. She writes about coming to Hollywood and working with some of the greats on film and primetime TV. She discusses her various love affairs, her film and TV roles and her only marriage that ended in a divorce, yet produced the love of her life, her three children.

After the marriage ended she needed money so she could send her kids through high school and college and in 1973 Bill Bell, creator and writer of a new soap opera at CBS, offered her a role on his new serial. In November, 1973 Katherine Chancellor debut and "The Young and the Restless" has never been the same.

With the ratings of the show in the basement (not uncommon for a new soap) Bill pitted rich socialite Kay against the poor/born on the wrong side of the tracks Jill Foster for the attention of Phillip, Kay's husband. At this point Katherine was a drinker, loved her stable boys and smoked like a train. Phillip, bored with his marriage, started a sexual and loving relationship with Jill who was now working on the Chancellor estate as Kay's Girl Friday. As the story progressed into 1974 then 1975 the ratings soared as viewers watched each day to see if Phillip would leave the drunken Kay and go with the beautiful Jill.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Grand Dame of Daytime! August 1, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have Jeanne Cooper on a list for possible Kennedy Center Honors while I know it's unlikely. She is still rocking the soap for almost 40 years as Madame Katherine "Kay' Chancellor, the matriarch of the soap opera, "Young and the Restless. This biography is long awaited and rich in juicy details about her amazing life. Like her soap role, she has had many ups and downs like a roller coaster ride including a troubling marriage, divorce, alcoholism, plastic surgery, love affairs, etc.

I totally agree that when she was awarded the 2004 Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award with nine other recipients like Rachel Ames, Frances Reid, Anna Lee MBE, Dame Ruth Warrick, Eileen Fulton, Don Hastings, John Clark, Helen Wagner, etc. that they deserved to be treated better. They were herded onstage like cattle and were left standing there. There were no speeches which should have been even off-air for the audience. The Daytime Emmys have been lamer in recent years and are a disappointment. It's funny because Jeanne Cooper won an Emmy afterwards for playing Kay and got the last laugh. Unfortunately, four of those recipients have died.

The American soaps are dying in our country and don't even qualify for endangered species act. The networks and their companies don't care unless they're making a profit. The days have long gone by when soaps ruled daytime afternoons. But if you want to know why, watch Jeanne Cooper on "Young and Restless" to see her in action. She and other veterans are the reasons that the soaps work when they can. With daytime turmoil and soaps being canceled, Jeanne Cooper still has a positive outlook on life and career and family.

All the while, she has maintained a dignified status as a grand lady of humble stature.

5.0 out of 5 stars "FUNNY, HEARTFELT, TOUCHING!" July 31, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The famous Jeanne Cooper delivers an endearing Memoir that tugs on the heartstrings. This insightful biography is colored with humor, inspiration, and touching moments as she portrays not only climbing the golden ladder to success, but also the dark days of her life. The author discusses not only the rich and powerful Katherine Chancellor, but Jeanne who had a traumatic childhood that haunted her most of her life, alcoholism, divorce and much more. The author shares not only TV and Hollywood fame, but also her life being raised as part Indian, the love for her three children, and her thoughts on marriage and love affairs throughout her life. The legendary actress paints a portrait of inspiration as she entertains. Enjoyable, and Highly Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about an even greater lady! August 4, 2012
By Stacey
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I read this book in a day and a half and what a great read it was! Jeanne tells us the story of her life in her own words; her good times and bad and even the most difficult, painful times in her life, Jeanne shares it all with us. This book made me tear up at times (when Jeanne discusses the death of her mother and a couple awful events that happened to her as a child), it made my jaw drop a few times (in a good way!) but mostly, this book had me laughing out loud a lot! Jeanne's comments are so "her" to say the least; witty, full of wisdom and experience and last but not least....hilarious! This is a must read for anyone who's a fan of this remarkable woman but also for anyone who wants to read a great book that you just can't put down. If I didn't love and admire Jeanne as I already do before reading this, I most certainly would have now after reading it...and I do so even more. Love you Jeanne, and thank you for sharing your life with us....and what an amazing life you have had! <3
