I have read book after book about kids and parenting, but I love this one the most. I could go on and on how much I loved it...

E.D. Hill is straight forwarded and I think some people would even reject her parenting, NOT ME! It's time more parents learn how to be parents.

1.0 out of 5 stars A rant with nice quotes
It is a rant with nice quotes covered in common sense statements and personal anecdotes. I will admit that with eight children you may need a more structured home environment than with perhaps one or two children; but the notion that you can not be both friend and parent to your children is ludicrous. If her methods worked with her children then that is wonderful for her...

I have read book after book about kids and parenting, but I love this one the most. I could go on and on how much I loved it...

E.D. Hill is straight forwarded and I think some people would even reject her parenting, NOT ME! It's time more parents learn how to be parents.

I have been somewhat of a permissive parent. Now I have so many tools to help raise my 8 and 9 years. Yes...I'm weak at times and that's ok we are not all PERFECT!

My children saw me reading this book and my daughter called it the manners book. Then my son said that he knew he was in for some changes after just reading the title. We made charts for chores, a chart for sportmanship and manners. They are all over the refrigerator. So far...so Good! Thank you Mrs. Hill! I would love more...write another book.

My husband recommended. He saw it advertised on TV. He knows E.D. Hill from the news.

I am going to buy this book for several people this Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Parents, September 26, 2008

Anyone who is a parent of children from toddlers to teens should read this book.

It is full of solid advice on a wide range of topics including: manners, discipline, sportsmanship, dress code, and more. The author is the mother of eight and a TV news journalist. Her children cover a wide range of ages. She offers practical suggestions for instilling boundaries and good behavior.

The section on manners alone would be plenty of reason to buy several copies of this and give it as gifts to parents. There is lots of great stuff beyond that as well. One part that I think is particularly good is the one on allowances. Not only does Ms. Hill help parents with good ideas on money issues, she also reveals some excellent resources that will help with tracking and paying out allowances based upon completed chores, etc.

Two other particularly outstanding suggestions include model contracts for home rules and driving.

This is a great book for any parent. Buy it, read it, and use her ideas!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible read, a must for parents, September 20, 2008
This review is from: I'm Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent: Helping Your Children Set the Boundaries They Need...and Really Want (Hardcover)
I purchased this book so I could give it to parents. I am a great grandparent, very interested in young families.
Oh, how I wish I had had this available 45 years ago. It was such an interesting read as well as very fundamental. I found myself staying up till very late at night reading because I had to see what she had to say next.
I feel that this is one of the 21st century problems with families. Parents are letting the children run the family because they want to be their friends.
I recommend this book to every parent with children.

E.D. Hill has written an excellent guide for parents and children. Setting boundries for both. She has examples of actions by children and the consequences one must pay. Also included are contracts parents may use with their teens,on drugs, driving, etc. This is a wonderful book on dealing with many of the problems parents face, and some,' what works'
solutions.

This is an easy read and very informative.

E.D. Hill hits the mark with this book. Every parent should be reading this book. It's a basic, common sense book on child rearing. Ms. Hill has a great sense of real values, this book is not for the politically correct, liberal minded, my kid can do anything they want crowd. This book is for parents who want to teach their children real values and a good work ethic.
Good job E.D.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must have!, November 11, 2008
This review is from: I'm Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent: Helping Your Children Set the Boundaries They Need...and Really Want (Hardcover)
If you are thinking about starting a family or all ready started, it's never too late to learn how to parent the right way. Yes, in this time of kids being spoiled rotten, it's no wonder why kids now days disrespect authority, this is happening because too many parents are " Friends " with their kids instead of being their parents. This is a must read for the next generation coming up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved some parts, brushed off others, February 23, 2011

This review is from: I'm Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent: Helping Your Children Set the Boundaries They Need...and Really Want (Hardcover)
I know this woman is not the most credible source of parenting information, but even so I think this book is a fun read with lots of interesting little bits and stories. I agreed with some of her methods but she's no expert and kind of glossed over a few subjects, or presented studies a bit carelessly. Regardless I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to most people! Don't expect it to be any kind of how-to or problem solver though, it's more of a fun read than a practical volume.

The part I liked best was the suggestions on how to deal with allowances, as well as her chapter on manners. They're worth a look!

5.0 out of 5 stars A reminder to get back to the basic values., December 3, 2010
This review is from: I'm Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent: Helping Your Children Set the Boundaries They Need...and Really Want (Hardcover)
I am weak. I want my child to always be happy, but, I want her to be respectful, appreciative, considerate and a productive individual. You can't always have it all. This book helps me put my job and duty as a parent back into perspective when I'm feeling weak. I keep myself in check by referring to some of the down to earth, basic concepts that are presented in the book. It's OK to say "no". Your child isn't going to like you all the time, and that's OK. You get one shot to help your children be the best that they can be...and I certainly found guidance and strength to do that with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars book review, November 8, 2010

This review is from: I'm Not Your Friend, I'm Your Parent: Helping Your Children Set the Boundaries They Need...and Really Want (Hardcover)
I got this book for my daughter when we had trouble raising her 2 teenage girls. I could not believe how much each of the girls had in common with the other children in the book; right down to eating ketchup on scrambled eggs. My son-in-law actually had tried taking off the bedroom door of the older teen as punishment. I had never considered that. It was a funny, unexpected surprise to see so many parents going through the same type of thing. I did cry at the seriousness of the teen situation which has not changed much over the years. I strongly recommend this book to anyone dealing with children of any age so you can be prepared ahead of time.

I am the type of parent/grandparent that would have done as the author did walking up on a movie stage to find the child I would be looking for.
